I sat down with Satya Nadella and Rebecca Jarvis on Good Morning America to talk about our newest #WorkTrendIndex data on AI’s impact on work. The findings make a few things clear:
1. AI is here and it’s changing how we work. What we spend our time on and how we do our jobs is changing on us, even if we’re not changing jobs. The skill sets for the same job has changed by 25% since 2015. Now AI is accelerating this trend and you can expect your job to change as much as 70% by 2030. You can get ahead of this change by thinking of your job not as a title, but as a set of tasks. Bucket the tasks that are likely to be augmented or automated by AI and learn how to use AI as a tool for those. You can then focus on the tasks that are insulated from AI, those that require your unique skills – your people skills – like creativity and collaboration.
2. Leaders need to be building skills-first playbooks and company cultures around learning. Our data shows 75% of people are now using AI at work so you can’t just ignore the fact that this technology is here. There’s a clear opportunity for companies to pull ahead if they’re harnessing AI as a tool that enables more productive and fulfilling work for their employees.
3. Finally, we’re having this conversation in the midst of graduation season where graduates around the world are entering a labor market that is brimming with change. I have an 18-year-old daughter who will be experiencing this first-hand and the advice I've given her is that this moment is not just a challenge, but an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future. Focus on 3 things...
First is to remain a lifelong learner. The landscape of work is evolving rapidly, and we know the skills that are in demand today might be different tomorrow. Embrace that change. Seek out opportunities to learn new technologies and methodologies, because the ability to adapt, learning how to learn is going to set you apart.
Secondly, don’t forget the human element. No matter how advanced our technologies become, the need for human compassion, ethical judgment, and leadership cannot be replaced by AI. Cultivate these skills. They will be your anchor and will differentiate you in a technologically driven world.
Finally, think about how you can use AI not just to advance your own career, but to make a positive impact on the world. You have the chance to apply these incredible tools to solve pressing global challenges, from climate change to public health. This is your moment to lead, to innovate, and to make a difference. With your energy, your education, and your ethical compass, you can ensure that AI enhances our shared humanity, rather than diminishes it.
