Federation of Seed Industry of India held a conference on Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) cultivation on 15-March-2024. Sessions were informative and shared experiences and issues. Following are our observations: Rice an important crop for India, is cultivated in >44 mha. Transplanted rice (TPR), which is used by 80% of farmers, emits 1.5% of total GHG (and 12% of methane). TPR uses 4-5K liters of water per kg of rice, accounting for 43% of the world's irrigation water. TPR is is unsustainable. DSR method saves 20%-50% water, reduces costs, labor, and methane emission by 30-98%. Considering the water shortage, DSR is the future Of 2 broad categories of DSR; 1st is where wetland varieties are being sown in DSR conditions, 2nd is where the varieties have been specifically bred for DSR KisanKraft Limited R&D team has been developing DSR varieties since 2017 Advantages of DSR: 1) Faster sowing and early maturity compared with TPR 2) 20%-50% less water requirement 3) Minimal evaporation losses, it recharges groundwater instead 4) Increased labor use efficiency, reducing drudgery 5) Higher profitability 6) Easy crop rotation & intercropping to improve soil health 7) Decreases CH4 emissions 8) Easy sowing by mech seeders, better crop establishment 9) Same or higher yield Challenges of DSR and solutions 1) Higher weed infestation in DSR, is solved by herbicide use, mechanized weeding, and integrated weed management. Herbicide-tolerant rice varieties are being developed 2) Pests like root-knot nematode are noticed in DSR conditions. Application of organic matter to keep the soil healthy and using biological control agents solves this problem 3) Deficiency of iron in DSR is managed by foliar application or Seed treatment 4) Wetland varieties grown in DSR conditions suffer from yield loss. Using varieties bred for DSR solves it Breeders urged R&D focus on development of DSR varieties. Agronomists suggested integrated weed management, e.g. pre-sowing irrigation and ploughing, using pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides, developing herbicide-resistant varieties, and crop rotation with pulses like Mung bean to manage nematodes. An UP farmer shared experience of FPO; which produced rice with a significant reduction in the cost, and increasing income Policy support: 1) Government is requested to incentivize R&D to develop high-yielding DSR varieties 2) Many states require separate MLT for each new seed. Government is requested to approve seeds based on agro-climatic zones for all of India 3) A platform to share technologies between public and private sectors 4) Success of DSR in the USA and Southeast Asian countries provide examples of strategies like the availability of varieties, agronomic practices, that India can adopt 5) Punjab, Haryana, AP, and UP have significant areas under DSR. Haryana provides ₹5,000/acre, and Punjab provides ₹1,500/acre by DBT 6) Develop a model where DSR farmers can monetize carbon credits, and procurement preference of DSR

Second mode of action and integrated pest management is a great start for the biological value proposition. However, to unlock their full potential, farmer’s will need to see the higher level of consistency in results. Building the data sets and application solutions that both increase biological efficacy and place the right biological (and the right rate of biological) are key to doing so.

🌎📝For effective Basmati rice cultivation, selecting the right land is crucial. Smooth lands with good water retention and a pH between 6.5 and 8.0 are ideal. Light loam soils with sufficient irrigation also work well. For nurseries, fields that previously grew sugarcane are preferable due to their excellent drainage and irrigation capabilities. It's important to eliminate weeds by thorough harrowing and cultivation. In preparing the nursery, applying 1000 kg of compost mixed with 0.5 kg each of Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens, or 2-3 kg of Zinc Sulphate per 1000 square meters, is beneficial. Additionally, applying 5 kg of urea on the 10th day post-sowing promotes healthy seedling growth. Field preparation involves ploughing twice or thrice after the initial dry season ploughing to ensure an even surface and strong bunds for rainwater retention. The field should be irrigated a week before planting, and spreading 2 kg of Crop Tiger per acre helps enrich the soil. For soil treatment, mix 150-200 kg of cow dung, farmyard manure, or leaf compost with 2 kg each of Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens. After moistening and covering this mixture for several days, it will be ready to enhance soil health and disease resistance across 1 acre. Selecting the right variety of Basmati rice is essential for maximizing yield and quality, taking into account local environmental conditions, crop duration, water requirements, and market demand. Healthy seeds should be selected by discarding those that float in water. Treat seeds with a solution of Carbandiazem or Thiram (2g/kg) and Pep-Rice primer (10 ml/kg) for 24 hours. For organic treatment, use a combination of Pep-Rice Primer, Trichoderma viride, and Pseudomonas fluorescens in water. After soaking, germinate the seeds under shade with periodic moistening. Fertilizer application should be based on soil tests. Avoid using DAP or Single Super Phosphate with Zinc Sulphate. After transplantation, apply Zinc Pep 7000 and Nano Aminofert Gold liquid at specific intervals to boost growth and yield. Transplant seedlings that are 20-25 days old at a spacing of 15-20 cm between plants and rows. Each spot should contain 2-3 seedlings planted 1.0-1.5 inches deep, ensuring the field has 2-3 inches of water. Maintain consistent water levels of 2-3 inches for 45 days after transplantation. Adequate water during key growth phases such as flowering and grain formation is essential to facilitate nutrient uptake and reduce weed competition. Weed control can be managed manually or with herbicides, ensuring a gap post-treatment with Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens. By adhering to these practices, farmers can significantly enhance the yield and quality of their Basmati rice crops, ensuring robust and healthy growth. ©®📠✉️ agricconsultant995@gmail.com #EnsuringFoodSecurity #YourFavouriteFarmer 24/7 👑 #SagadFarms

Importance of Fertilizer Application in Soybeans by Agronomist H G C Like any other crop, soybeans require the right fertilizer so that they can produce a good yield and have a healthy appearance. The feeding of soybeans begins with inoculation. Before planting, it is important to dress the soybeans with an excellent inoculant. An inoculant such as Bioma Brady, supplied by Agricrop, is one of the best options for farmers to consider using to treat their seeds before planting. It is a self-sticking inoculant containing a live bacteria called Bradyrhizobium Japonicum, which is housed on the roots where nodules form. The bacteria are responsible for initiating nitrogen fixation on the soybean roots, providing the nitrogen necessary for soybean growth and giving them a vibrant dark green color as well as retaining nutrients to benefit the next crop. After inoculation, it is essential to plant the soybeans within 24 hours; otherwise, re-inoculation will be required if not planted in the stated time. During planting, it is necessary to apply a fertilizer rich in phosphorus to promote vigorous growth and good root development in soybean crops. As the phosphorus naturally present in the soil is not enough, farmers then need to apply additional phosphorus to ensure robust root growth towards the nutrients. In this case, N.P.K can be applied or MAP which has a high phosphorus content. It is important to remember that every crop requires phosphorus for successful establishment. Since the inoculant applied at planting provides nitrogen to the plant, there is no need for top dressing in soybeans. In addition to the basal application, farmers can supplement the crop with a foliar spray such as V12 Multi, an excellent foliar product containing the much needed smaller micronutrients that enhances yields and prevents early abortion of flowers. It’s multi purpose meaning it can be applied during both at the vegetative and reproductive stages. The recommended application stages for V12 Multi are as follows: 1) The first application should be done two weeks after germination. 2) The second application should be applied when the crop begins flowering. 3) The third and final application should be done 21 days after the second application. Effective management and achieving high yields in soybeans begin with the soil. To make the most of these fertilizer applications, it is essential to conduct a soil test to understand the soil's pH requirements, ensure the availability of necessary nutrients for soybeans to thrive, and achieve excellent results. Stay glued for the next post, which will cover disease and insect control. Looking for Hybrid Seeds? We have them in stock For Inquiries and Purchasing: +267 3112095 / 74475205 / 75358336 Visit our branch in Phakalane Industrial, Plot 43174 Unit 18 and Zowa Opposite Tsele le TSele #hybridseeds #highquality Take your time to know a lil bit about Hybrid Seeds Hybrid seeds, also known as F1 hybrids, are the result of controlled cross-breeding between two distinct parent plants with desirable traits. These parent plants may have specific characteristics such as disease resistance, high yield, or other qualities that make them desirable for cultivation. The goal of hybrid seed production is to combine the best traits from each parent to create plants that exhibit improved characteristics. Here are some key features and advantages of hybrid seeds: Heterosis (Hybrid Vigor): One of the main benefits of hybrid seeds is the phenomenon of heterosis, also known as hybrid vigor. Hybrid plants tend to exhibit greater vigor, growth rate, and overall performance compared to their parents. This is because the combination of genes from two different parent plants can result in a more robust and productive offspring. Uniformity: Hybrid seeds often produce plants that are more uniform in terms of size, shape, and characteristics. This uniformity can be beneficial for farmers and growers as it simplifies crop management, harvest, and marketing. Disease Resistance: Many hybrid varieties are bred to be resistant to specific diseases or pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and increasing crop yield and quality. High Yield: Hybrid plants are often selected for their ability to produce higher yields compared to their non-hybrid counterparts. This can be especially important in agriculture to meet the demands of a growing global population. Improved Traits: Hybridization allows for the development of plants with improved traits, such as better taste, longer shelf life, or tolerance to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., drought resistance). Commercial Seed Production: Hybrid seeds are typically produced by seed companies through controlled breeding programs. These companies can maintain the purity and consistency of hybrid seeds, ensuring that growers receive reliable and high-quality seeds. It's important to note that while hybrid seeds have many advantages, they also have some limitations. For example, the seeds produced by hybrid plants are usually not suitable for saving and replanting in subsequent generations because the offspring (F2 generation) may not exhibit the same desirable traits as the F1 generation. Growers often need to purchase new hybrid seeds for each planting season. In summary, hybrid seeds are a product of controlled breeding aimed at combining the best traits of two parent plants to create improved, high-performing crops with qualities such as heterosis, disease resistance, and high yield. These seeds play a crucial role in modern agriculture, helping to increase food production and quality.
