About 20 years ago, as a wee baby marketer, my sales team (Ian, JF, Matt, (Bill) 👀) taught me the word "boondoggle." We used it endearingly to refer to big industry events that usually entailed more team dinners and bottles of wine than actual deals getting cut. I didn't really expect new business from these trips. When we met new leads, sure, we were happy. But I had more of a "show up and things will happen" outlook. Or they won't, and we'll still have a good time. San Diego, Los Angeles, Dallas, New Orleans. All the trade show cities showed off their local flavor to us lanyard-clad corporate tourists. Debauchery aside, the random contacts and relationships we built between sessions and after-hours were invaluable! They couldn't have happened in a pre-planned way. They weren't forced, but rather the product of a bunch of people with an industry in common pushed into the same zip code for a short, intense week. I'm going on my own boondoggle next week, to Web Summit in Lisbon. I like it already. It's in a country I've never been to before. The session topics look interesting; the app is intuitive. Hey, we can check in at the airport arrivals terminal! (Thank you for solving the pain of pre-registration with that thoughtful touch.) I'm most looking forward to: 🤖 all the thoughts about AI, AI, and more AI 🚀 hot takes from VCs 💅 judging the booths and taglines 🥘 the Portuguese food scene! Not necessarily in that order. ✨ Dive In 2023 was an incredible week spanning 35+ countries with over 20,000 attendees taking part in 130+ events!  There were so many learnings and insights from across the week but here are four things we learnt at the festival this year.   Let us know what you learnt from this year’s festival!   - One million people live with a disability globally and 80% of employees that have disabilities choose not to disclose it - Only 22% of the STEM workforce are women    - Only about 12% of AI specialists are women. That means we are building these powerful tools without having women and people from underrepresented groups around the table, shaping those tools in a way that works for everyone.      - When looking at innovation, we must ask: Do we have the right people in the company? If we have the right people in the company, are they in the room? If they are in the room, are we listening to them? - Erik Johnson, Incoming Active Underwriter at MIC Global.      - Race is a social construct historically used to classify people based on physical characteristics, while ethnicity is what a person ascribes to based on a shared culture, language, practice and belief. I've really been "in my feels" during this season of gratitude. I try to show gratitude often but reflecting on this year has me full of pride in an equal way to any gratitude I feel. We don't always talk about the difficult times. People see success or wins on social media and think that's real life but reality is often different. 2023 hasn't been easy. Have you seen my face all over social traveling to events? Yes. Did we make our largest investment ever in sponsorships and in-person meetings this year? Yes. We did this because the economy, especially in real estate, isn't great. We had to be more places than ever before to really nail down business this year. It was HARD work but we did it. It was important because we had many customers this year that had to make tough financial decisions and eliminated our services. On the personal side, I hate this. On the business side, I totally get it -- but it affects my business too. So on the road we went! (Forever thankful for Bradley Erb). We also had our share of team challenges this year. In a 365 period, our team will have added 6 new babies to their families. This brings unprecedented leave times for our crew. Combined with the usual vacations, sickness, trainings, etc. was a lot to manage but we did it! (My ride or die, Heather Lunsford keeping me sane and us organized). We're also combating HUGE changes in the way people interact digitally. It's changing the core structure of our business and we're working hard (and fast) to evolve for our customers. I'm proud that through all of this, our culture internally is stronger than ever. Our team is in a great place overall and I know that any challenges next year we easily be met with this crew. I'm a lucky guy, a grateful owner and a proud teammate. Below is a video our team made highlighting the fun part of this place during our retreat last week. In a world where the lines between physical and virtual, real and fake, true and false, are increasingly blurry, I think "How to be HUMAN" is one of the most pressing issues we, as a human species, are currently facing. Connection, communication, belonging, purpose and joy, are some of the things we crave (and are biologically wired for) as humans. Analytical and creative thinking, resilience, flexibility and agility are some of the most important skills for the future, according to World Economic Forum. How can we develop and strengthen things like connection, meaning, joy and cognitive skills in schools, workplaces, communities, societies... and in our own personal and professional lives? In short: in an increasingly technologized world, how can we become more HUMAN?
