Getting your mind right is important to keep your creativity flowing. Also taking the time to know and appreciate history has always been important to me. I’m spending time in Hyannis which is located in Cape Cod. It’s also home to the Kennedy Conpund. President Kennedy said often, “I always go to Hyannis Port to be revived, to know again the power of the sea.” I’ve enjoyed it and have made the trip several times to rejuvenate my creative thinking.

It was about SHOWING the thing the brand used to be TELLING.
Let’s back up…
When RXBAR debuted, nobody took it seriously. It was an ugly brand in a crowded space.
It wanted to differentiate itself as simple and natural, so it used a slogan: “AS PRESCRIBED BY NATURE.”
Problem is, lines like that are meaningless. Lots of brands say they’re natural, so consumers don’t know who to trust.
That's why the ingredient list worked. It SHOWED consumers how natural the product was — so they felt like they could decide themselves, without being told.
This led to a sales explosion, and then a $600 million sale to Kellogg.
It’s worth asking: What are YOU telling people, that you should be showing instead?

Just had an incredible experience visiting Casey's in Des Moines, Iowa! 🚗🏪
Casey's has over 2,400 stores and has done a tremendous job growing throughout the Midwest. I had the chance to see firsthand how they’ve uniquely set up their location right across from the Capitol building in Iowa, catering to a bustling area with high employment and a large local school across the other street.
What really impressed me about Casey's is their consistent branding and data-driven marketing approach. They focus on the product, follow the trends, and understand what consumers want, without going over the top with their creative.
I spent the day with Casey's directors, getting an inside look at their entire marketing strategy. It was rollout day, so I got to see new campaigns in action—perfect timing for Senergy as we help our retailers with their rollouts.
Interestingly, many of the marketing strategies Casey's uses align with what we do for our clients, like Nittany Minit Mart. Both Casey's and Senergy Marketing Group emphasize clear, consistent branding and making data-driven decisions. We focus on understanding consumer needs, staying on top of trends, and ensuring that our campaigns are straightforward and impactful.
This visit was a tremendous learning experience for me and the team at Nittany MinitMart. We gained invaluable insights into how Casey's works with different agencies and manages their marketing efforts internally. The convenience store industry is so dynamic, constantly innovating and bringing new ideas to the table.

It really is a small world! I’m on a business trip to Iowa this week visiting convenience store retailers in the Midwest. It’s been an incredible experience seeing how chains like Casey’s and KwikTrip do certain things. By complete chance our itinerary led us to Newton, IA for tonight’s hotel stay. Newton happens to be the home of WIN Magazine, one of my first ever clients when I came out of college! We still work with Bryan each year on the Hodge Trophy Fan Vote. I was able to catch up with Bryan and get a tour of his town, home and office. Walking their halls was a trip down memory lane with several of our covers over those early years framed. It’s really special when things in your career come full circle and I’m blessed to have people like Bryan still involved in my life. Thank you for your hospitality Bryan! Great to catch up!
I spent the day on the road yesterday in Manheim, PA with Bill Thomas at Lezzer Lumber meeting with ISM Construction to talk social media strategy, and visiting with the Lezzer Commercial Sales team in Manheim to develop their sales pitch decks. Road trips are always about delivering value for our clients and their customers, and provides a nice break from the regular routine.
For those who are wrestling fans we work with WIN Magazine in Des Moines, IA every year on the marketing and promotion of the Hodge Trophy. Known as ‘The Heisman of College Wrestling’, this award is given annually to the best collegiate wrestler. Penn State has had several winners over the past decade, and we’ve had a blast helping WIN grow awareness and interest around this award. It’s been featured on ESPN, and every other major sports news outlet. We’ve even brought the award to my hometown in Philipsburg for photo and video shoots! We’re proud to be a part of this great tradition, and look forward to working with Bryan Van Kley and his team every year the week after Nationals!
