Steel structures now being put in place for our #geothermal #electricity plant in #Cornwall – the first in the #UK. One of many more that we have planned. Towards the end of last year, we secured funding for three Geothermal Engineering Ltd Ltd projects through the #ContractsforDifference (CfD) scheme – the first ever awarded to #geothermal projects. However, if the UK is to retain its place as a leader in renewable energy globally, we must recognise the potential of the #energy beneath our feet and help projects to be developed faster. A considered #geothermal strategy would go a long way towards this. I note that the German economy ministry said on Friday that it was drafting a law to expedite the approval processes for geothermal plants. And in the US, a new bipartisan bill submitted by US senators seeks to expedite the permitting process for geothermal by applying exclusions already in place for oil and gas. With an election tomorrow… if our new #UKgovernment is serious about catalysing new renewable energy projects, it must start setting #geothermal targets and removing the barriers to a geothermal future.
