Simplifying men who perpetrate violence as “monsters” while not trying to understand more deeply where it all goes wrong will not lead to behaviour change in this population. I get the sentiment behind directing funds into women’s service and the emotional reaction of “they are just bad men”, but I want practical, tangible, measurable change in the number of people being impacted by DV. That won’t ever be achieved if you disregard the perspective of perpetrators. We don’t have to agree with those perspectives, but we do need to understand them instead of assuming we know what they are. No impactful solutions are ever created without first fully understanding the problem. Hoping to learn more from this interview and book.
Coming up on the podcast we have No Buts author Marg Chipperfield. After this recording was made for her virtual book launch in March, Marg was invited to prepare a submission to the Victorian parliament for a review into family violence. Marg and one of the men in No Buts were also featured in Mamamia this week. I'm converting the launch into an audio podcast in case you missed it. No Buts is an important and timely book.
