Older women are largely understudied in clinical settings, yet we outlive men by more than five years in the U.S. and outnumber them at older ages. So, why do we lack representation in medical research? Following last year’s announcement of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, medical researchers are now considering which priorities should be first on the list for this population. There are many gaps in our current data, especially around medication and treatment, cognition and mental health, and mobility. In order to better understand women’s health, here are few suggested research priorities from physicians and medical researchers according to an article from KFF Health News: - Understanding why older women have a higher probability of developing heart disease or becoming vulnerable to mental health; - How to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and physical mobility; and - How to improve medical screenings for various types of cancer. A few months ago, I discussed similar disparities in the Women’s History Month edition of my #SimplifyingHealthcare newsletter – keep reading for my thoughts on how our industry can bridge these gaps across #AccessToCare, clinical trials, talent and investment: https://lnkd.in/gqP6aERb

Four facts I learned about woman's brain health in the last week at HLTH Europe: 1. 2 out of 3 Alzheimer's patients are women 2. Women have 7 times highr chance of misdiagoses of cardiovascular issues compared to men! 3. 1 out of 3 women will die from a neurological disease 4. Women represent 80% of depression, migraine cases and anxiety (3 times more likely to suffer from anxiety than men!) That last item perhaps have something to do with the fact that women make up 80% of family caregivers. This gap between men and woman health is deep, complex and unjustified. It starts from under representation of women in medical research (meaning medical recommendations are more tailored for men than women), and continues with less money going into women health (adding to the minority of woman entrepreneurs and investors - only 10% of the investors community). That is why in many cases woman health is still considered a niche market (even though this market is expected to reach a trillion dollars in the next decade!) This demands a deep social change and health policy change. It should include raising awareness about the importance of women's health and developing education programs focused on women's health ,development of women-specific Treatments and increased investments and research that can lead to more effective treatments for women. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their insights in the HLTH Europe conference, and a special thank you you Dr Antonella Santuccione Chadha for your inspiration! President and CEO | National MS Society | Connecting people, resources and strategy to create a world free of Multiple Sclerosis
Good health - That's what we all want. Unfortunately, there are big gaps in our knowledge about women's health in multiple sclerosis (MS). The International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in MS (https://lnkd.in/e7ZyBTb2) recently published a review that shone a light on this critical issue - https://lnkd.in/e8d543Es. Now you have an opportunity to help shape research efforts to address the scientific gaps identified by the committee. The Women’s Health working group convened by the International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in MS is conducting a survey to gain further insight into the most important questions in six broad areas for future research on Women’s Health in MS. The survey is being conducted on their behalf by Amber Salter, PhD at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. If you would like to participate in this anonymous survey, please follow this link https://lnkd.in/e3nPWCzN. The questionnaire will take about 5 minutes to complete. People living with MS, health care providers, researchers, and patient advocacy groups are all invited to share your thoughts on research priorities in Women's Health in MS Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and make your voice heard. Also please pass this along to colleagues who may have an interest in this area. Your input is vital! Together we are stronger. #ms #multiplesclerosis

Adding to my reading list for a closer read. I wish it were better news, but the progress since the last report 20 years ago is: we know what to do. Now, we need to go ahead and do it. The table that starts on page 21 is a great summary.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have just issued a new "Ending Unequal Treatment" report that found that people of color are still disproportionately uninsured, underutilizing care services and underrepresented in the healthcare workforce. This is a follow up to the 2003 study on inequities. It shows some outcomes are worse, some are better but most show continuing problems. The 2003 report led to a series of action steps to close the gaps. Let's hope the same occurs in response to this report.

"Medical research has shortchanged women for decades. This is particularly true of older women, leaving physicians without critically important information about how to best manage their health." The Washington Post spoke to physicians and medical researchers about what efforts to address this gap, like the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, should prioritize. One cross-cutting priority starts with data and reporting. Clinical trial data need to be (1) collected from sources representative of the diverse population affected, and (2) analyzed and reported by different demographic factors, to give insight into how effective treatments are for different segments of the population. #healthequity #healthanalytics #techequity

AccendoWave - A #Pain Data Company Frustration over #medical gaslighting is heating up again, with more than 262 million views for #medicalgaslighting on TikTok. What we see in this stream of thousands of posts on social media are firsthand stories from #patients, mostly #women, who say #doctors have ignored, minimized or dismissed their symptoms as stress or anxiety, often with severe consequences. Medical gaslighting can kill women and girls. Recent research suggests that when the ambulance arrives in a cardiac emergency, women are less likely to get appropriate care, and when we arrive at the hospital with chest pain, we’re less likely to be classified as an emergency, to be given an electrocardiogram or to be admitted. And though it’s well-known that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, studies suggest that we’re less likely to be prescribed key cardiac medications and twice as likely to have our cardiac symptoms attributed to mental illness. A Top 4 Health Equity Solution and Top 15 Remote Monitoring Company, AccendoWave, benchmarks objective #brain wave pain data (specialty, gender, age) and has nine pain #databases: Emergency Department, Maternal Health, Oncology, MSK, Medical Surgical, ICU, #Women, Adults, Seniors to eliminate bias, improve outcomes and reduce health care costs. If desired, AccendoWave can also create customized pain databases for partners that can be accessed on the Datavant platform. https://lnkd.in/dB6Qy3gJ
