Congratulations, Julia Atanasova! It’s an incredible achievement to be one of only three Canadians presenting at the 5th International Conference of the Trisomy 21 Research Society in Rome. Our work and research on the co-occurrence of ASD in individuals with Down Syndrome is vital, and it’s fantastic to see it being recognized and sparking valuable discussions among international experts. You are the best to present this work! I’m honored to have been part of this journey with you Olaf Kraus de Camargo, Jennifer Crowson, Oksana Hlyva and the rest of the team. Your dedication and hard work are truly inspiring. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of research and making a difference in the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome. Kicking off a conference with a welcoming message from the Mayor of Rome at the Sapienza University, the oldest University in Rome and the largest in Europe is truly a unique experience! I am honored to have been one of only three Canadians—and the sole presenter on the DS-ASD topic—at the 5th International Conference of the Trisomy 21 Research Society in Rome, Italy. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of T21RS, a quote at the conference struck a chord: "Only those who are foolish enough to think they can change the world, actually do." – Albert Einstein. This reflects our bold commitment to push the boundaries of scientific research on Down Syndrome. At the conference, my research on the co-occurrence of ASD in individuals with Down Syndrome sparked valuable discussions among international experts, highlighting critical research gaps and the urgent need for broader engagement. I extend my deepest gratitude to Rudaina Banihani, MD, MMEd and Olaf Kraus de Camargo, whose collaboration, expertise, and guidance have been instrumental in advancing this research work. Including my advisors - Kerry Boyd, Oksana Hlyva, and Jennifer Crowson - whose diverse perspectives and expertise have significantly enriched this project. Additionally, I am profoundly thankful for the support from Translational Research Program - University of Toronto , Temerty Faculty of Medicine as well as Edyta Marcon and Joseph Ferenbok, PhD who continually empower my endeavors in the field of translational research. We are committed to maintaining our momentum and extending the reach of our impactful research. Continue to follow our journey as we strive to enhance awareness and share our findings across the globe. I am thrilled to announce that my research work on the co-occurrence of ASD in individuals with DS has been accepted at 5 conferences in 3 countries across 2 continents. None of this would have been possible without the great support of my collaborators and advisory team members. For healthcare professionals interested in further supporting our efforts, our survey link is still open.
