Food System Transformation Symposium 8 November 2023 - Agrico Research (Bant, The Netherlands) In cooperation with SeedNL, we are hosting a special international symposium on Wednesday, 8 November 2023. Contributing to food security is part of the mission of many food producers and included in the policy of governments. However, actually contributing to food security depends on many factors other than production. During this symposium, you will gain an insight into the complexity of food systems, see the difference between theory and practice, and we will provide tools for and examples of successful transformations of food systems.   Speakers from various countries will take us through the afternoon. Along with Rob De Wijk (HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies), we explain the strategic implications of food and with Bart De Steenhuijsen Piters (Wageningen University & Research) we provide an insight into how food systems work and the associated challenges. Yosuke (Yo) Kotsuji (IFC - International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank) explains how financing problems can be overcome. We will cover a number of successful case studies and discuss the role of passionate people in these examples. We close the symposium by joining Myrtille Danse (Solidaridad Network), Mayumi Endoh (OECD - OCDE) and Rene van Hell (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in discussions about the political choices, the difficulties encountered in practice and what we have to do differently together, so that everyone benefits, and food systems become successful. The Food Institute Graduate Council at University of California, Berkeley is soliciting proposal abstracts of in-progress or completed scholarly papers, research projects, speeches, or film/mixed media works to discuss at the 4th annual Food Systems Conference, titled “Diasporic Foods: An exploration of ongoing food relationships and connections.” Diaspora refers to the dispersion of a group of people from their homelands. Traditional food cultivation, preparation, and consumption can be strong sources of connection and grounding to both ancestral and current lands of diasporic peoples.
