This year’s Poverty Innovation Summit is about how we use innovation to impact our communities. Hear what Stephanie Hightower, Kenny McDonald, and our very own Danielle Sydnor say about why it’s important to understand poverty and systemic racism, how we can challenge ourselves to think differently, and why it truly takes a village to enact change with cross-sector collaboration. What will your commitment to action be? How can you use innovation to make an impact in your area of interest? See you this Thursday, June 20th at our 3rd Annual Poverty Innovation Summit! Doors open at 8:45 a.m. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. #RISEPovertyInnovationSummit #RTII #RISETogether #InnovateToMakeAnImpact

While the goal of ending #extremepoverty by 2030 might seem ambitious, it's worth noting that significant progress has been made over the last half-century. People living in poverty at the current $2.15 line declined from over 2 billion in 1990 to 659 million in 2019. During the era of the Millennium Development Goals alone, nearly a billion people rose above $2.15 a day. We have the financing capabilities and the evidence-backed solutions to address extreme poverty at scale; hear from Shameran Abed and Esther Duflo on why ending extreme poverty is within reach in this recent Devex opinion piece: https://bit.ly/48mg4U7 Shameran Abed will also be in conversation with Raj Kumar to discuss pathways out of poverty today at 6 PM EST (register to join the conversation virtually): https://bit.ly/3PMpiSw

Nobody wants generational poverty - and yet, somehow, this is what we have ended up with. Over many years of working in poverty reduction, I have had countless conversations with people who want to help those experiencing poverty, but don’t know how to get started. There is room for each of us to help change lives for future generations: we simply need a deeper understanding of how our individual acts can bring us one step closer to a just society. And so today, I’m excited to share that this May, I will be publishing a book for people who have a desire to make an impact. In Just Act, readers will access insights on common and complex questions about poverty. It’s a practical guide filled with inspirational stories, effective initiatives and actionable steps to combat poverty. This project has been a passion of mine for the past few years, and I’m so excited to share it with you. Launch date and details are coming soon. #JustAct #TransformingToronto

Make a real difference! Could you become a part of the movement, learning Bridges Out of Poverty? Have you considered being dedicated to lifting individuals out of poverty and building a more equitable society? Consider the following: “Does a person have a sense of being linked to the mainstream of society, of being in the dominant subculture, of being in accord with society’s values?” “Can a person perceive society’s messages as information, rather than as noise? In this regard, the poor education that typically accompanies poverty biases toward the latter.” Robert Sapolsky, Aaron Antonovsky Bridges Out of Poverty Training Supplement #MakeADifference #PovertyAwareness #BridgesOutOfPoverty

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that we're promoting this week is: (#1) No Poverty - End poverty in all its forms everywhere This is why we care, and why you should too! "Since 2019, 70 million more people were pushed back into extreme poverty - currently defined as those who live on less than $2.15 per person per day at 2017 purchasing power parity. The rate increased from 8.5% in 2019 to 9.3% in 2020. By the end of 2022, nowcasting suggests 8.4% of the world population or as many as 670 million people could still be living in extreme poverty today."
