Last week, I had the privilege of attending Acadian Ventures Annual General Meeting (AGM) in San Francisco. It was an honor to participate as an LP, gaining insights from other LPs, Founders, and exceptional speakers. I extend my gratitude to Jason Corsello and Thomas Otter for the invitation and for organizing a productive event in my previous hometown. Looking forward to the next one! #acadianventures People Obsessed

While not breaking news, the recent panel discussion at the Tech in Asia Conference, moderated by Rishab Malik, firmly reiterated a recurring theme: The tech winter has raised the bar for quality on all accounts. Capital is still available, yet now more than ever, founders face the imperative of clearly articulating unit economics and the path to #scalability and #profitability. Thanks for having us, Tech in Asia!
Over on the Aspire Founder's Summit stage, Joshua Agusta, executive director at Vertex Ventures and Jeffrey Seah, general partner at MSW Ventures shared a candid exchange on fundraising during challenging times, exploring the nuances of the current tech winter. Moderated by a partner at Jungle Ventures, Rishab Malik, this session discussed about how both VCs and founders are weathering the storm and adapting to the new fundraising landscape.

Enabling Tech Innovators to Solve the World's Biggest Challenges I Faculty Chair and former Vice President of Community & Impact @ Singularity University
Despite what you might read in the news, successful founders come from ALL backgrounds, including from different age groups. For example, Sérgio Mascarenhas Oliveira co-founded the med tech company Brain4Care in his eighties, before passing away in his 90s. I was excited about to read about Brilliant Minds, a VC fund that supports early-stage founders over the age of 60, and is also working to shift our perception of who can be a founder. This topic is even more important given advances in healthcare and longevity. If you are in this age group, I hope you consider launching a startup knowing your next act is still to come and may be your greatest yet! https://lnkd.in/dS5nRKJC

What an incredible few days at the Angel Capital Association annual summit held in Columbus, Ohio. Over 400 people in the room and lots of incredible conversations and insights were had over the 3 days. Key takeaways were: * If 10% of your network is doing 90% of the work, then when 1/3 of them retire we all lose - we need to set the expectation around getting involved when you join * We need to be able to sell what we are buying - we need to sell to the later round funders * AI is going to help make companies exit more quickly, but it will also make companies obsolete more quickly * The top 3 drivers of successful exits over 95 deals were 1) experienced and effective CEO (79%), 2) engaged and aligned board (82%) and 3) timing! timing! timing! (74%) * The top 3 drivers of unsuccessful exits were the inverse of the above! * Good boards add value to their companies, if you have a good board you have a chance of success, if you have a bad board you have a recipe for disaster * The first round you are investing in the dream. The second round you are investing in the reality * When thinking about investors, founders need to ask WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY * Companies rarely fail because of the technology, they fail because of the business system * Investors with less knowledge always ask the most important questions * Don't wait, just start investing in deep tech. You will only get good at this by doing it. Remember 1/2 of early stage companies fail no matter what. So get on with it. * Angel groups have the worst business model ever, getting free services from angels! Incentivise your members to undertake the heavy lifting and get involved Huge congratulations to Ronald Weissman, Pat Gouhin and the entire Angel Capital Association board and team for an incredible summit! We have left inspired! Looking forward to Colorado in April next year! Michelle Cole Monique Lau
