International Women's Day 2024 is an opportunity not only to celebrate women, but to fight against inequality. This inequality is starkly presented in Victoria’s criminal justice system, where women—particularly First Nations women—are severely overrepresented. Indigenous women are 21 times more likely to go to prison than non-Indigenous women and are incarcerated at an alarming rate, with First Nations women being the fastest-growing cohort of Australians in prison. The Torch recently participated in the Keeping Women Out of the Justice System study, which found that the majority of women in prison are victims of abuse, leading to mental and physical health issues, drug and alcohol use, homelessness and financial insecurity. It found that many women in custody are low risk offenders on short sentences or are held unsentenced on remand. But even a short period of incarceration can have a devastating effect on First Nations women who are at risk of losing their children, homes, jobs and connection to community—factors which all contribute to repeat offending. So what can be done to break this cycle? We know that programs like The Torch strengthen First Nations women’s self-esteem, confidence, connection to culture and community. You can also show your support for the women of The Torch by purchasing or licensing an artwork and sharing this post with a friend. "You know how things happen for reason and how I had to do jail and I had to do a long sentence. The seven years gave me plenty of time to do lots of healing and as a result it was just convenient as well to chip away at my artwork and accumulate a deposit for a home loan." - Stacey Edwards, Taungurung/Boonwurrung peoples https://thetorch.org.au/

That’s how societal norms change Have you ever regretted: - Smiling? - Laughing at a stupid comment? - A sexist joke? - Or simply said nothing, pretending it didn't happen? Instantly regretting it, but did nothing about it? I know I have. I know many of us do. Each time we do, we minimize it. Each time we tell ourselves “let’s not make a big deal out of it” because we don't want to come across as hysterical, we validate and condone that nasty behavior. But how can we say to the youngest generation that we are progressing if we keep turning the other cheek? Let's stop building on guilt. Let’s stop building on emotional exhaustion. Take a stand! Call it as you see it when you see it. And do it because each time you do, it's like acknowledging your worth, acknowledging women's worth. Do it because we deserve real progress. Do it because we deserve better. Take a stand. Show the world what progress is like. Set clear boundaries. Stop accepting less than what should be a given: Respect and Consideration! #WomenEmpowerment #PersonalDevelopment #PersonalGrowth #Change
Pitting women against each other to create some sort of conversation is just… boring. And outdated. Well done, Pink, for shutting down that narrative and honoring the Queen of Pop who opened the door for so many 👑
