Tomorrow, Climate-KIC is hosting another deep dive conversation which could be interesting for all at this moment. "Confusion & Crisis: working through and with crises." We are at a crossroads. It is an opportunity to offer new ways living, with new governance and regenerative and community-based solutions. But it is also a time of danger, when anger fuels nationalist, populist and extreme movements. Transformation tends to happen in the aftermath of a crisis, but how to we prepare? And how do we do this while we also experience the effects of the poly-crisis. We are now in 2024 and it is time to realize that the wicked global problems that we are facing, such as growing inequalities, resource overconsumption, and climate change, are deeply interrelated. Only a systemic approach that takes into consideration this interrelation and its underlying causes will allow us to understand and resolve the situation. Yes we can! But we will not resolve the metacrisis with the same silo approach that has participated in creating it.

I want to commend my old friend, Tom Steyer, for writing Cheaper Faster Better. Tom has given us a positive narrative of future possibilities. He makes a compelling case that through a combination of public policy support and private investment we can create a “race to the top”. Those who cut emissions ahead of their rivals will be able to earn disproportionate financial returns for their innovation and market leadership while also helping the planet. Through profiles of Climate People, i.e., innovators, disrupters, public servants, concerned citizens, these ideas become tangible and real. While some positions Tom takes are debatable, I encourage you to read his book, especially if you want to explore how widespread societal benefits can be reaped as we make measurable progress towards a net zero, regenerative, and inclusive future. Tom, thanks for making this important contribution to our collective thinking at this critical moment!

Over the last several months, I have had the pleasure of working with World Economic Forum, Bain & Company, and other VCM leaders to prepare a new document “Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets: A Playbook for Corporate Action.” This report -- released today -- highlights the urgent need to unlock the full potential of the VCM to accelerate climate action and codifies corporate best practices for high- integrity participation. Couple of key excerpts (see p.39): "Current frameworks support early adopters and companies already on an accelerated trajectory to net zero, but they do not provide clear guidance or incentives for hard-to-abate industries, limiting their ability to promote growth. ... Put simply, moving the carbon market up the S-curve of wider corporate adoption requires rethinking incentives and recognition, as the catalysts that motivated early adopters are not sufficient to drive the wider corporate community of the next 500 or 1,000 companies to invest and act at scale." Shockingly, instances like COP 28 hosted over 2456 fossil fuel lobbyists protecting their interests. In 2022, over $4 billion was spent on lobbying in the US alone. This influence hinders the capacity of governments to enact laws that truly serve the planet and humanity, sidelined for powerful financial gains. 🏛️ Short-Termism in Politics: The Cost of Quick Wins In the relentless realm of politics, immediate gains often overshadow sustainable strategies. The drive for short-term benefits can extract a steep social and ecological toll in the long run, contributing to the metacrisis we face today. 🤝 Competition over Collaboration: A Global Conundrum While collaboration is vital to overcoming global challenges, nations find themselves mired in competition. The clash of interests hampers the collective effort needed to tackle shared wicked problems on a planetary scale. 🌐 Cultural Culprit: Materialism and Individualism The pervasive materialist culture driving globalization, rooted in individualism and consumerism, fuels the overexploitation of ecosystems and exacerbates social inequalities. It's a global challenge deeply rooted within the fabric of modern society. 🔄 Systemic Shift: A Call for Transformation To unravel these complexities, a systemic approach is paramount. We cannot overcome the metacrisis with the same systems and values that generated it.
