A new study in the European Heart Journal raises alarm about the safety of #xylitol, which is a well-known ingredient in gum and mints, used to prevent poor oral health. As reported, xylitol increases platelet reactivity, is thrombolytic, and is associated with major adverse cardiovascular events. https://lnkd.in/ghzjjeFt This warning is similar to that issued about fluoridation of the water which is increasingly considered to have neuro-degenerative effects, particularly early in life. More studies about the risks of xylitol and fluoride are obviously needed. But preventive dentistry is now cautious about which way to turn. #Prevora has an exemplary safety record over many years, has multiple drug approvals and, as a professional treatment, is selective in its dosing and monitoring.

The study was using 30 grams of xylitol. Xylimelts has 0.55 grams of xylitol. Xerostrips has 0.30 grams of xylitol. Final comment says it warrants further study. : https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae244/7683453
