A recent post from Sequoia Capital explores the growing payback gap in AI investment vs. revenue. It’s worth a read, and it’s a good reminder that we’re still surfing the peak of the GenAI hype cycle, at least in terms of speculative investment. This, combined with recent industry analysis showing an approaching plateau in GenAI benchmark performance suggests we might be nearing the apex of the curve. I think this is a good thing. Getting past the noise and hype will provide much needed space to rationalize expenditures in GenAI and to develop practical and pragmatic applications vs. throwing them at every conceivable problem, real or fancied. #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Innovation #Technology #

Exciting news! Elon Musk has delivered on his promise and open-sourced xAI, sharing the Grok 314 billion parameter model (296GB) via torrent! This MoE model features 8 models, with only 2 active at a time, requiring 86B parameters to fit in memory. When quantized to 4 bits, the active models can take up 36.5GB RAM, with inferencing requiring approximately 45GB RAM.
