💚 NEWS 💚 We’ll be following and supporting three huge international court actions this year that are set to change the climate fight. This year, three international courts based in The Netherlands, Germany and Costa Rica will weigh in on climate action as those at the forefront of the climate crisis across the globe ask for advisory opinions on what governments are legally obliged to do about climate change. Led by small island states and global youth organisations, these advisory opinions will clarify what legal obligations their leaders have to: 👉Respond to the climate crisis to protect human rights 👉Control emissions and other activities that cause harm to the ocean and marine environments 👉Address climate change and take meaningful climate action The opinions given by the international courts will shape climate laws and rulings going forward. We’ll be supporting all three of these actions by submitting our own analysis and expertise, as well as bringing you updates on their progress throughout the year. Find out more here:

Interesting read. The report demonstrates how courts are finding strong human rights linkages to climate change. This is leading to greater protections for the most vulnerable groups in society, as well as increased accountability, transparency and justice, compelling governments and corporations to pursue more ambitious climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. "The total number of climate change cases has more than doubled since a first report on the issue, from 884 in 2017 to 2,180 in 2022. While most cases have been brought in the US, climate litigation is taking root all over the world, with about 17 per cent of cases now being reported in developing countries, including Small Island Developing States."

22 EU Member States have yet to submit updated National Energy and Climate Plans to the European Commission, a serious blow to the European Union's position as a global climate leader.    The EU must use its new mandate to address the logistical, political, and funding obstacles that prevent member states from setting a clear path to reach climate targets. #CarbonMarkets, when done right, offer a powerful means to finance much-needed climate solutions now and in the long term, while promoting transparent, inclusive and equitable economic development. As Amanda Leland shared, the White House’s announcement signals the #UnitedStates government’s determination to scale high integrity voluntary carbon markets (VCM), also marks a high-level endorsement of #CarbonCredits and their role in driving private sector finance to support global emissions-cutting efforts. After years of Environmental Defense Fund’s efforts, #China launched its national #EmissionTradingSystem (ETS) in 2021. Today, China’s carbon market is the largest in the world; however, it currently oversees only the country’s power sector — responsible for more than 40% of national and 12% of global CO2 emissions. We are working closely with partners to support China’s ETS to include more high-emitting industries and eventually cover about 70% of China’s carbon emissions. We’re also supporting the new voluntary carbon market that was launched in January 2024, which channels financing to initiatives that benefit the climate, ecosystems, sustainable development, and people’s livelihoods in China. #India publicly announced the formation of its first domestic, regulated carbon market in 2023. The government requested EDF’s confidential advice in the early stages of the market’s conceptualisation because of our long track record of support for developing carbon markets in the US and China, along with our reputation for results in India. We conducted research on critical building blocks of the carbon market and helped shape policies that guide the market’s development. Our goal is to ensure that the #IndianCarbonMarket generates a high-quality carbon trading ecosystem that provides accountability and incentives to drive emissions reductions in line with India’s goals.

The fight against climate change will be won in partnership with the industry based on concrete decarbonization roadmaps with proper government support. The fight against climate change will not be won by activist judges making political decisions through the backdoor of justice and which might just lead to deindustrialization and degrowth!

I’m honored to have been part of today’s announcement from the Biden administration. By establishing a consistent and supportive policy framework for voluntary carbon markets, the administration is helping to unlock much-needed investment in climate action around the world. At today’s event we discussed the transparent, credible, and equitable outcomes high-integrity carbon markets can deliver for people and the planet. Here are three critical takeaways I shared:

How can you tackle climate change 🌍 ? Step 1: Vote for EU elections! Voting for the EU election (voting between 6th and 9th of June, check the link below for your country) is crucial to enhance climate action. And climate change is at the heart of many of our current and future societal problems. Three reasons why voting makes a difference: 1. Shaping Climate Policy: 🫶The European Parliament shapes  EU climate policy and legislation. By voting, you support candidates and parties committed to ambitious climate action. And you ensurethat strong policies are enacted.To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy, and enforce environmental protection.  More MPs in favor of climate action, better climate policies. 2. Funding for Green Initiatives: 💰The EU allocates substantial funding for climate-related projects and initiatives, such as the European Green Deal. This dealh aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Great ambition! Voting for representatives who prioritize climate action influences budget allocations and ensures continued/increased funding for sustainable projects, research, and innovation. 3. International Leadership and Cooperation: 🦁The influence of the EU transcends Europe; it's also about global climate strategies. By electing MEPs who are dedicated to climate action, you support the EU's leadership in international climate negotiations and agreements( as the Paris Agreement).
