Last week, our managing director Katrin Ley participated in Changing the Fashion Industry session at the DLD Circular 2023 in Munich 👏 In this particular session, Patrik Lundström from our innovator Renewcell, Gudrun Messias from adidas, and David Puyuelo Huguet from COLEO joined as panellists, and it was moderated by Jennifer Schenker from The Innovator. These industry experts discussed how circular innovations can be a driving force in changing the fashion industry. A few insightful points were highlighted in her talk: ✅ To address the impacts in the fashion industry — carbon, waste, water, etc. — business as usual is not enough. Scaling innovation across all steps in the supply chain is key for industry transformation. ✅ Over the last 5 years, the interest in circularity and innovation has grown exponentially. Fashion for Good alone has scouted and screened more than 3000 innovators, supported more than 150, and raised financing of more than 1.5 billion euros. ✅ We need to address key barriers to unlock further scaling of hard-tech innovations, which is mostly related to 3 actors: innovators, industry, and investors. A big thank you to Fashion Roundtable ORG LTD for inviting me to an event celebrating the launch of Clare Press's new book 'Wear Next: Fashioning the Future'. As you can see the event was packed out with leaders in fashion sustainability, and we got to hear read throughs by luminaries such as Safia Minney, MBE FRSA, Christopher Raeburn, and Caryn Franklin 🤩 This quote from the event really sums up fashion sustainability for me: 'This is not a new idea, there are so many people who have already done this work, and when we are thinking about the future we are building on the present' This is so true about many wider aspects of sustainability too; we need to lean into things we already know (clearly linking to the importance of indigenous knowledge) and not try to reinvent the wheel for every challenge. The 16 chapters of Clare's book really sums this up for fashion: 1. Conscious 2. Fair 3. Slow 4. Even faster 5. Upcycled 6. Community 7. Less 8. Local 9. Global 10. Traceable 11. Repaired 12. We are in an era of change, and designers play a crucial role in shaping the future of fashion. When considering reducing impact, increasing the life of products and promoting a circular disposal, we are designing for sustainability or, more accurately, we are applying the rules of eco-design. Eco-design is officially being introduced in EU by a regulation. ❓ What is the legislative evolution? What does it imply? Are there conflicting opinions? At the Science Based Fashion Talks, an event on eco-design solutions promoted by Lineapelle and organised in collaboration with SPIN 360, we invited Caterina Occhio, Member of the Scientific Committee on Sustainability & Sustainability Advisor at Accademia Costume & Moda, to delve into the role of designers in the roadmap to the future of fashion.
