Stephanie (support) and Eddie (operations) visited the food pantry near our Eugene office. They helped organize and fill food boxes for those in need. Thank you both for dedicating your time to support the local community. #installhappiness

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM

In the past five years, our total food collection amounted to around 2 million pounds. However, in the current fiscal year alone, we are on track to exceed that amount. Why? Well to put it simply: we had to collect more because more people need our help than ever before. We're serving 56x more people monthly than any time in our history. And when people need our assistance, we do whatever we can to help. All of the food we rescue from places like Shaw's Supermarkets, Stop & Shop, Chick-fil-A Restaurants, and more is one of the key ways we are able to stock our pantry with fresh protein, fresh produce, and pantry staples. For what we aren't able to rescue, we buy. This allows us to ensure that our pantry is always stocked with culturally relevant and diverse foods that meet the needs of our community. It's no easy task rescuing more than 30,000 pounds of food alone a day and helping nearly 200 people a day access food, clothing, diapers, and other critical necessities. But with a team as small as ours, you do what you have to. Want to help us continue to ensure everyone in our community has what they need? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eR6ZFNNn

2023 was a year like no other in my career. In the end, the food pantry I manage served 2.2 million pounds of food to about 150,000 individuals in 42,000 households. To do this: + we doubled our productivity from 50 clients per hour to 100 and weekly hours of service from 6 to 7.5 + we increased the number of unique families served each week from less than 200 to more than 800 + we eliminated quantity limits from most food categories to ensure families get what they need + we shortened wait times and replaced standing in lines outdoors with indoor seating and bathroom access + we upgraded our interior, remediating an asbestos floor, painting the walls and reconfiguring space for improved flow + we implemented a Latino Program that raised the share of Spanish-speaking clients from less than 10% to more than 20% + we upgraded our exterior through landscaping, carpentry, striping the parking lot + we cut costs and reversed the post-pandemic decline in revenue It is not possible for a food pantry to measure the outcomes we hope to effect, such as increased educational performance and decreased chronic disease. But knowing that we delivered more than $5 million worth of food into low income households, 80% of which are people of color, fills me with tremendous pride. In 2024, I expect that the focus will be on increasing the quality of our relationship with non-English speaking clients. A donor has enabled us to hire translators. As we improve our communication, I expect we can find ways to increase the quantity, quality and dignity of the service we provide. If you’ve read this far, consider one more statistic: at NEFP, our cost to produce one shopping cart is $10. If you support us or any pantry with a monthly donation, it doesn’t take much, maybe just a fraction of your hourly wage rate. Or two drinks at Starbucks. Or half a month of Netflix. I invite you, wherever you are, to be a part of the fight to reduce food insecurity, increase economic stability and thus community health. You can invest your time or money in my pantry or in a pantry close to where you are. Thanks for your consideration.

Food Justice Advocate | Food Pantry Consultant | Bringing justice and dignity to the fight to end hunger
This time of year, our food pantry sees stress and anxiety levels rise. Inflation, the increasing cost of utilities, and the financial demands of the holidays bring us our busiest season of the year. We can't change this- but we can make sure that our organization is prepared and ready to accommodate the individuals coming to us for support. When we are explicit about recognizing that anyone using a food pantry is also facing a host of other challenges, then we can be more thoughtful and deliberate in how we serve them, and make it a better experience for everyone. Here are some steps for building a trauma-informed food pantry, since this work is never just about food and hunger.

Did you know that food insecurity affects rural America in the following ways: *In 2021, 11% of rural households were food insecure. *9 out of 10 counties with the highest food insecurity rates are rural. *Rural communities make up 63% of all U.S counties, but 87% of counties with the highest food insecurity rates. *Food insecurity is linked to a wide range of negative health outcomes, and rural Americans are at higher risk for poor health outcomes than their urban counterparts. *Although food security is slightly higher in rural areas than in urban areas, 12.5% of individuals living in rural communities were food insecure in 2019. Your dollars make a difference. Every $1 = 2 meals. Start your new year off right and donate today!
There is only one place for neighbors to buy groceries in Sabetha, a rural Kansas town that is home to fewer than 3,000 people. That means if someone can't find the nutritious foods that meet their needs—or isn't able to afford them—they are left with little to no options. Luckily, the town's community food pantry is there to help fill the meal gap when times are difficult and uncertain.

The impact on a family's health and budget can be enormous. Purchasing food daily rather than doing a big shop means not only higher costs, but also facing a struggle to buy nutritious food for growing children. That's why our HMP Addiewell Visitor Centre team did everything they could to help a family in need get a much needed new fridge freezer. The Cyrenians team applied to the @BBCChildreninNeed Emergency Essentials Fund on their behalf and within a week, their new appliance was up and running.
