Almost a million students in Ukraine study remotely or in a mixed format, partly remotely and partly offline. Those who attend school offline are regularly interrupted by air raid alerts.
Military Intelligence I Ukraine Veteran I Providing defence authorities and industry across EMEA with the right solutions for their needs - and LinkedIn with my personal opinions.
Let's not forget about the frequent power cuts during the day, which also take a toll on remote students. And still, for my children I would always prefer the Ukrainian education system over the Russian one, where students are reportedly being indoctrinated or sent to build artillery shells.
A real honor and an inspiring experience to have put together this conversation between Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Education, Dmytro Zavgorodnii, and edX Founder Anant Agarwal.
Amid near-constant air raids, bombings, mass migration and an existential challenge to his and his fellow citizens’ national identity, Dmytro’s kept learning going and hope alive for millions.
(Literally millions. He says it drives him and his team… In this context, what is education if not a belief in the future? Throwing data and ops behind it, preserving education continuity through online education buoys an entire generation of Ukrainians. How do ya do that? He explains it all.)
He and his team are heroes of education, and the full convo is below.
Interesting survey on former Chinese students in the US: Of the 404 respondents, 71% of students from 1991-2004 stayed on in the US and only 30% of students from 2004-2015 . . . .
From a different source: SEVIS (Department of Homeland Security's Student and Exchange Visitor Information System): For the number of Chinese students in the US, there is a 29% decrease in enrollments post pandemic: 368,800 in Jan 2020 vs 262,992 in Jan 2023

Whilst this article was first published in 2022 the challenges highlighted within have not diminished for universities and schools across Ukraine, quite the opposite in fact.
As the years have oassed and the destruction increased so too have the pressures and impacts on these institutions, their teaching staff and students.
Knowing individuals in this article personally and having delivered courses for the students mentioned I have huge admiration for their work and achievements over the last 2 years since the latest conflict began.
As mentioned in the article both students and teachers alike have found it incredibly difficult to focus on their work in between the constant disruptions and distractions involved. Often working and studying in unideal conditions and environments.
Yet, against the odds, many students have graduated due to their amazing dedication and tenacity to complete their education. What achievements!
It continues to be a huge privilege in 2024 to work alongside such resilient and talented individuals such as Professor Oksana Boyko and her colleagues from across academia in Ukraine 🇺🇦

I don't think the problem in education is percentage grades. Let's first examine why education exists in general. The reason education exists started with practical first. Let's put this in perspective: Imagine you want to build a house like this one 👉🏿🏠. Naturally, in your mind, you would first plan and start looking for simple materials (wood, nails, iron sheets, doors, etc.) to achieve this goal. After gathering the materials, you would begin building the house, even if you don't have all the materials. As you build, let's suppose you write ✍🏿 down what you did; this is your report. From this practical exercise of building the house and writing down your report, you gain good knowledge and skills for building a house. Now, let's suppose you are not satisfied with your house structure as it was your first time. You embark on a quest of asking your neighbors how they have built their houses (this process of asking is essentially what China did), and you write down their responses. As you write these responses, you note the superior building methods compared to yours. Let's suppose you compile these for future reference; then, the compiled reference is called education. you see the point I making here is that education should be 75% practical or a least 50/50 for theory and practical respectively. should be based on a theoretical mark you achieved only. I know someone would say this is an expensive way of doing education but this will create much needed entrepreneurs. The theoretical part in education was meant to improve one's practice skill in a form of advice for best result in his or her art. Of course to understand South African l education landscape you must also look at how apartheid era over Shadows the current education system but maybe is a topic for another one day.

They say that if you study, get an education, and have a little intelligence, you can make money.💵
👉This is not the case.

Britain’s universities are world-leading. We know it, foreign students know it – and Beijing knows it. It’s been well-documented for some time that Chinese parents take a strong interest in British education, sending more of their children to UK campuses than to any country other than the United States. The Chinese state also takes an interest.
Beijing’s “wolf warriors” have made little secret of their desire to rewrite the global order to defend their authoritarian regime, and safeguard their government against public discontent. Central to this ambition is technological superiority, and strengthening the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). In turn, this appears to be increasingly reliant on British universities.
This is a great article, & we agree the status quo is unsustainable! We also think point two amounts to a taxpayer bailout & will not to come to fruition, with the state of government finances it is “Pie in the Sky.”
What is missing from these recommendations is a focus on supporting #internationalstudents returning to their home countries following their UK #degrees & into successful #careers.
This is the only way to end the backlash against the #internationalisation of our #highereducation institutions, & evidencing that international #studentrecruitment to the UK is in the majority of cases #immigration neutral.
This would quash the arguments regarding pressure on housing, the NHS & jobs - all of which have played strongly in the #election with The Reform Party running second to labour in a large number of constituencies.
“The status quo is unsustainable, but cutting international student numbers with no regard for the wider consequences, as the current government has sought to do, would cause more harm than good …
First, temporary limits could be imposed on the rate of growth of international students in locations where housing shortages are identified. UK Visas & #Immigration#UKVI has until recently taken a fairly lax approach to #studentvisa approvals, partially because it cannot verify universities’ infrastructure plans.
Second, #universities should be compensated for the loss of income from international students with an increased teaching grant tied to inflation to a level that covers the costs of #teaching home students. Opponents of the sector would say the government has no money but Labour, most likely to end up in office, has been clear that it is in the business of pursuing growth & the investment in this area should be seen as a downpayment on the country’s future growth. And also as a way to stop Sue Gray’s fears of an institutional collapse from coming to life.
Third, the International #Education Strategy should be updated to enable & encourage the #diversification of international student nationalities & levels of study, so that we are not too dependent on particular markets.
Finally, tweaking the student & #graduatevisa regime to allow applicants to spread the cost of application fees, which are much higher than in competitor countries, across multiple instalments could increase the UK’s attractiveness as a destination.
It’s true that international students bring many benefits to the UK. But being honest about their critical importance for the sector, diversifying the flows to mitigate risks, & addressing some of the pressures can help secure these benefits for the UK in a sustainable way for the #future.”

Worth a read - The director-general of MI5 has warned vice-chancellors that hostile states are actively targeting universities to steal technology. Universities need international students to continue to be leaders of higher education. Vetting staff and students is happening, but are the right tools being used to aid those recruiting? Vivienne Stern, the chief executive of Universities UK, added: “We welcome the government’s approach to working hand in hand with us to get the mechanisms right. We will gather views from all 142 universities in our membership to help government develop the right approach, which allows us to balance the need to remain open to collaboration with the need to protect national and university interests.”
