In 2005, I took the road to my father's village from Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania. The village is located along the Senegal River in the southern part of the country. People here live off traditional activities like agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing. A simple and serene life that also comes with its own set of challenges. One day, during my stay, I engaged in a conversation with my grandfather in our family's homestead. At a certain point of the discussion, we had the idea to take a photo. He got up from the inner courtyard where we were sitting, and retreated to his room. After a few moments, he came out wearing a beautiful blue "Boubou". A traditional West African outfit. He poised for the picture. No smile. I took the shot. For some reason, we didn't take a photo together that day. I remember thinking, "Next time, there will be another chance". I promised myself to capture that moment, me and him on a picture, during our next meeting. Wrong decision: When I left the village, I came back only 4 years later in 2009. He was no longer there. My grandfather, whom I am named after, passed away the year before. I have no photo with him and I won't have another chance. It's something that I regret. "Next time" is the cause of many missed opportunities and all sorts of regrets. It's a trap. Don't trust it. If you have something in mind, don't wait. Take your "shot". The Baobab Tree and the Grove: An Allegory of SMEs in Africa In a vast and diverse land called Africana, a mighty baobab tree stood tall and majestic, its thick trunk and sprawling branches providing shelter and sustenance to countless creatures. Scattered across the land were countless smaller trees, shrubs, and plants, each contributing in unique ways to the richness and diversity of the ecosystem. Each of these smaller plants began as a tiny seed, full of potential and promise. With the right conditions—sunlight, water, and fertile soil—these seeds sprouted and grew. One such seed was a resilient acacia, growing in the semi-arid regions where the soil was tough and water was scarce. Through sheer determination and adaptability, the acacia developed deep roots that could reach underground water sources. It provided shade and nourishment to the livestock, played a crucial role in preventing soil erosion, and offered gum Arabic, a valuable resource for trade. This baobab was the symbol of strength and stability, much like the large corporations and industries that dominated the economic landscape. Yet, while the baobab was impressive, it was not the only source of life and vitality in Africana. The countless smaller trees, shrubs, and plants were the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of Africana, vital yet often overshadowed by the grandeur of the baobab. They represented the dreams and ambitions of the people of Africana, who, despite limited resources, were determined to create, innovate, and thrive. This week, we will be celebrating Small and Medium Enterprises in Africa and their profound impact on our economy. These SMEs are like the resilient acacias, providing essential goods and services, driving innovation, and creating jobs.
