For most of our history, we have viewed ourselves as a “divine species,” considering ourselves as the owners or administrators of nature. But today, we finally understand that we are just another species, one that lives according to the law of carrying capacity and planetary limits, like every other species. As our population exceeds its carrying capacity, we not only take from each other but also from future generations and other species’ basic living requirements, impacting the natural life that sustains us. When populations increase, their distribution range also increases. This is the case for all mammal species. When we talk about marine mammals like sea lions having fewer places to rest peacefully with their calves, and when new beaches are colonized by humans, encroaching on resting areas of birds, we are talking about the expansion of human presence.

Shipwrecks are known to attract marine life, but what happens when they’re damaged by commercial fishing activity? #WHOI maritime archaeologist Calvin Mires and marine biologist Kirstin Meyer-Kaiser surveyed some of the estimated 200 wrecks in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to find out. With less than 100 confirmed sightings worldwide, this is one of the rarest ray species in the world... The ornate eagle ray is the largest of all #eagleray species, with the majority of encounters having been recorded in Australia and the Indo-West Pacific region. 🌏 Not only is this #marinespecies rare and elusive in sightings, but it is also #endangered—with populations decreasing. 📉 There is so much we still don't know about our ocean, our planet, our home. Humans have this innate call for discovery and understanding about life and the world around us that exists deep within our DNA—yet we are on the edge of destroying so much we have yet to explore. We owe it to ourselves, our future generations, and nature itself to pivot towards a path of empathy and preservation rather than greed and exploitation. Are There Sharks in Greece? Seeing a shark in Greek waters is very rare. Sharks prefer deeper, cooler waters, where they usually hunt fish and other marine animals. More than 400 shark species swim in the world's oceans, but only about 47 can be found in the warm Mediterranean Sea. Greece has the longest coastline in Europe, dotting the blue Aegean Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The most common species in Greek waters are the Thresher, Copper, Sandbar, Spinner, Angular, Angel, Roughshark, Oceanic Whitetip, and Great White Shark. Most of them are harmless to humans.

Beautiful isn't normally a word associated with worms, but just look at this. Gorgeous, isn't it. This is a bifrost nemertean, a species of marine worm found in the Caribbean. It was just one of around 2000 new marine species that were described by taxonomists (people who specialise in identifying species) last year. Is it possible to pick a favourite discovery? This worm certainly ranks in my top ten, and it also ranks in the top ten of the taxonomists who contribute to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), a comprehensive list of all the marine plants, animals, and other marine life that we know exist or once existed. To have hope for the future and the health of our planet is important. That’s why the most recent Hope Spot from Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance is good news. Mission Blue is led by Her Deepness, renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle. Mission Blue searches for ocean spots that are important to conserve and protect called Hope Spots. Hope Spots are found all over the world. Hope Spots work to become Marine Protected Areas, MPAs. MPAs are similar to national parks on land. They are no-take zones, meaning no fishing is allowed to help with population and biodiversity increase. The most recent Hope Spot at Canyon of Caprera near Sardinia, Italy is another example of possibility. The Canyon of Caprera Hope Spot is special because of the marine mammals that inhabit this area. Marine mammals such as Monk Seals (which are critically endangered), Risso’s dolphins, and Cuvier’s beaked whales are some of the key mammals. This area works to elevate its protection status to an Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA). Hope Spots reminds us that protecting specific areas can lead to a healthier ocean and ultimately a healthier planet. No rocketship needed to explore this galaxy siphonophore. This colonial organism, Praya dubia or giant siphonophore, comprises many parts called zooids that work together to survive. Some zooids are responsible for reproducing, others for hunting or digesting. They live in the Ocean’s Twilight Zone and dine on small crustaceans, invertebrates, and other small fish. In this footage, after the fade the video runs x2 speed, so we could show the entire encounter on one Reel. According to our pals at @mbari_news, they can grow to lengths of 130 feet, or 40 meters, longer than the Earth’s largest animal, the blue whale — the creature’s body is about as thick as a broomstick. This carnivorous super-organism was spotted during the #SalasyGomezRidge expedition off the coast of Chile. Climate change is causing havoc in the Antarctic - it’s time for urgent action from implementing marine protected areas to strengthening fisheries regulations. At the upcoming Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) meeting (Oct 16-27), decision-makers from 27 member countries will have the opportunity to prioritise the conservation of Antarctica. The significant drop in Antarctic sea-ice levels is an alarm bell. CCAMLR must honour their commitment to establish a network of marine protected areas around the continent. We cannot wait any longer.
