Unpopular Opinion: If we aren't going to thoroughly reform higher education, a few industry leaders should partner with an institution to mirror OJT at the enterprise level. Four years of enterprise-level OJT means that you're beyond "fresh off the streets" and orders of magnitude closer to "plug and play". Yes, in a perfect world, we wouldn't have to take out student loans. We'd get hired and pipelined. But, in the meantime, there are subsidized loans that can bridge that gap. I know WGU and SANS.edu are trying to get closer to that benchmark. If you know of others, comment them below, I'd like to know where my blind spots are.

Financing Your Global Education: A Complete Guide to Studying Abroad with Student Loans

It's a difficult environment for a higher education organisation seeking franchise arrangements with an English university (or any organisation with degree awarding powers) at the moment. While an collaborative academic partnership can be a win-win opportunity for both parties involved, there's a high degree of perceived risk involved - on both sides. Universities have always been aware of the potential impact on key metrics such as continuation, timely completions, and progression (graduate outcomes), but more and more, there are concerns about potential student loan fraud, where applicants, often with weak English language skills are enrolled, and some have no intention of completing the programme. The latter is not new - people have enrolled on courses with no intention of completing their course ever since the maintenance loan was introduced. I recall listening to two Foundation Degree 'students' (I use that term loosely) nearly a decade ago who said that they only signed up for the course as they received more money than if they were unemployed. They were not worried about the debt they incurred as they assumed they would never pay it off anyway. So, it is right that the Government is aware of the concerns - it is taxpayers' money after all! Universities should ensure that partner institutions apply the English language tests rigorous and there is no excuse for any student to continue into the next Semester if they are not intentional about attending. But where does that leave the 100s, perhaps 1000's of excellent organisations worldwide that rely on franchise arrangements? For those with sufficient experience of desiging curriculum, I would strongly recommend seeking a partnership for validated provision - it provides more security for both partners. I have supported educational organisations around the world to develop validated provision in business and related subjects and it's always been a positive developmental experience for the academic team. Of the 355 franchised providers operating in 2021/22, 229 (65%) were not registered with the OfS. OfS registration for franchised providers are not mandatory, instead they can access the registration benefits through their lead provider. 45% of all student loan applications suspected of fraud were for franchised providers, accounting for just over half of the value of fraud. We must hold the lead providers accountable for being the enablers and failing to identify and manage high risk cases.

Jonathan Hinkles excellent post, it’s certainly not a level playing field accessing government funding for pilots training compared with other white collar professions. Thanks for sharing. To make matters more challenging, there are fewer private loan options available too, something Rocket Industries Ltd is working to address. The economics do get tricky financing £100K, especially when the individual doesn’t have a house to remortgage, and even that is becoming increasingly difficult. If there are any lenders out there in my network that are interested in developing a viable lending solution for pilots in the aviation sector, I’d welcome a discussion. Our current learner finance programs have limited loan terms, unaffordable at the high price ticket, I’m thinking somewhere in the region of loan terms 10 year+ Of course, I understand this doesn’t solve the lack of government funding in pilot training, or address the VAT issues, however, I’m aware that greater access to viable private funding options will make pilot training more accessible to individuals who find themselves locked out of the industry.
