I want to celebrate a win. I want to thank you all and share my gratitude for winning the Otago University 3MT Grand Final doctorate 'People's Choice' in 2023 by an overwhelming margin. Leading people through a thesis in just three minutes (3MT) is not easy. Keep it simple and practice. It is an outstanding win for the Business School and the Doctor of Bus Admin Programme (currently ranked no.1 in the world). My research confronts the critical issue of continuing global biodiversity loss due to a global wildlife investment gap. In just 50 years, the Living Planet Index has collapsed by 70%. The UN is calling for urgent action saying the situation is now critical. Yet we spend more on cosmetic surgery and cosmetics than securing our children's future with nature. Are our children really ok with what we are taking away from them? Ask them. 'Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini' My translation; it is not my win, but our win. We at Otago University are designing and testing a new bulk international financial tool that will help your children - it is called the BIC. Thank you once again and watch this space.

As we await the #DEA's final guidance on Buprenorphine prescribing without an in person visit, Bicycle Health yet again sent providers to Alabama to comply with the state's mandatory in person visit which they rolled back last year. Two things: 1) While our providers are so engaged with their patients and will go to the nth degree to make sure they have access to this life saving treatment -- ours is a privilege that not many providers in our space have. In fact, many tele-#substanceusedisorder providers have had to close doors because of the #DEA's proposed guidance and its implications. 2) The patients we are traveling so far to see are patients who have been supported with resources to find providers in Alabama, and still within two years cannot find providers close to them. And in the areas where some providers exist, most have no capacity to take them on. And this is why the tele-option is so valuable as it allows us to stretch our resources beyond physical proximity. So what does this mean for you? Please ask questions and listen to understand what this reality really looks like for the many impacted by SUD. And if you are in a position of power, Please be Vocal. These impending decisions are majorly consequential!
Our second Alabama Airdrop is complete! Thank you to everyone who made it possible for our patients to continue their care. "To protect patients in recovery who otherwise faced losing access to treatment, the initiative brought clinical staff with Alabama state licenses into the state to conduct mandatory in-person patient evaluations with 160 patients, ensuring their recovery could continue with Bicycle Health for up to one more year. Bicycle Health’s team successfully completed in-person evaluations with 98.8% of these patients over the course of 3 days." Some Chamois numbers from DSEI. Equivalent Advertising Value (EAV) is a method we use to measure the value of published PR. We use a calculation based upon known or estimated advertising rate cards with a conservative multiplier added, to take account of the fact that editorial is generally more interesting and attractive to readers than an advert.
DSEI 2023 in numbers. A HUGE thank you to all those who supported us including our clients, our partners, media owners, journalists and everybody else we had the pleasure to meet or to work alongside in the lead up to and at the event. Was just reading the foreword by Doug Tallamy...WOW! Here's a small sample... “Every once in a while, a book comes along that meets an important need most people don’t know they have. Sarah Jayne’s Nature’s Action Guide is such a book. Sarah could have called her book Conservation for Dummies—not that she wrote it for true dummies, but because she has identified a subject everyone needs to know but almost no one was ever taught: how to share our spaces with the natural world.” … “Sarah wrote Nature’s Action Guide as a complement to my book Nature’s Best Hope. My last chapter suggested 10 things homeowners could/should do to help share their property with nature. After reading my book, Sarah set about trying to enact each of these suggestions in her own yard but quickly realized that, even as an experienced gardener, she didn’t know enough to be successful. And if she didn’t know enough, many other budding conservationists were likely to struggle as well. Sarah’s solution was to write Nature’s Action Guide, a step-by-step, easy to use manual that explains how each of us, regardless of our background or gardening experience, can accomplish all of the goals I propose in Nature’s Best Hope, as well as several I only hinted at! Restoration biology is a relatively young scientific discipline a few decades old. Practicing restoration in human-dominated landscapes, in comparison, is in its infancy and we are still learning what works and what doesn’t work. One of its many distinguishing features is that Nature’s Action Guide is current, explaining state-of-the-art conservation in suburbia with the most up-to-date best-practices available. Even a half-hearted attempt to follow Sarah’s action items is guaranteed to improve the biodiversity potential of your landscape and thus the productivity of your local ecosystem. For this, we all owe Sarah Jayne our heartfelt thanks and gratitude—because, whether we appreciate it or not, we all depend on those same ecosystems.” Douglas W. Tallamy
I'm excited to say that Nature's Action Guide is finally published! Thank you to everyone who has helped make it a reality!

The growth and demand that we have seen during the first half of the year is indeed mind-blowing. The fact that we have reached these results, while also delivering on our ESG targets, makes me even prouder and quite impressed. As of the first half of the year… … 🩸 We have reached 39.1 million patients with diabetes. That’s 4 million more patients who have access to live-saving medicine, compared to the same time last year. … 🧸 Through our Changing Diabetes® in Children programme we have reached 45,000 children with diabetes – an increase of 32% compared to the end of June 2022. … 🏭 We have decreased our carbon emissions from operations and transportation by 28% compared to the first half of 2019 (decreased by 10% compared to 2022) . … 💉 Two of our human insulins are now approved for flexible storage without refrigeration in 23 countries. We have a lot of work, complicated challenges, and unanswered questions ahead of us. But it’s important to stop and smell the roses from time to time. To appreciate what we have accomplished so far. So, THANK YOU to everyone who has been part of this important work 💙 Imagine what we can accomplish in the second half of 2023 💪

RIP an original thinker. Let me share a brilliant insight from Daniel Kahneman which I heard on the The Economist podcast Boss Class. When he got his team together to develop new thinking and write the book Thinking Fast and Slow he asked them all how long they thought it would take. Estimates coalesced around 18 months. (For those that don't know the book, it popularised the idea of System 1 and System 2 thinking, the basis of much behavioural science.) He then went to the principal at his college and asked how long such projects usually take. He said only 40% ever finished a book and the range was 7-10 years. Which was exactly how long TFAS took to complete. The lesson he took away: don't trust gut instinct! Optimistic planning is usually an inside view rather than an objective outside view, reality checked and based on hard evidence.
RIP Mr Daniel Kahneman. You have changed my perspective and for that I am forever grateful.
