The word Sergeant comes from the Medieval Latin word servientum, meaning “servant”. As a Master Sergeant, that means I am a Master Servant. Not only in the service of the Air Force and Nation, but also those I serve with. Lately, I’ve been seeing the trend of SNCOs not taking care of there people and only being in the service of themselves. It’s disheartening to watch the frontline troopers have their needs neglected, while those on higher ranks only look to ensure they and their fellow SNCOs are taken care of. They live by the mantra “it sucked for me, so it can and will suck for them”. Why can’t they see that it doesn’t have too? Why are they unable to get out of their own way and take care of the people and be of service? Like Uncle Ben said “With great power, comes great responsibility”. If you are in a Leadership role or position, take a look inside and make sure your taking care of your folks. Make sure you are there for them, sometimes a little bit goes a long way. I do my best to ensure my folks have what they need as well as some of the comforts they deserve to ensure they are taken care of. As my time in the AF winds down, this is one of the many things I reflect on. We can proactively shape our military leadership for the better. In 1941, General Marshall led a major restructuring of the military's leadership. Hundreds of officers were retired or discharged to bring in new and dynamic perspectives. The initiative was controversial, but aimed to improve the army's effectiveness. We must improve our leadership by identifying and promoting capable individuals with skills and innovative vision for modern warfare. These high-potential officers should not have to wait for the traditional command rotation; their talents are needed now more than ever. If we hesitate, our adversaries may capitalize on our stagnation, forcing us into a reactive stance.

Leadership lesson from Retired USMC Lieutenant General Jon "Dog" Davis. Years ago I had the chance to hear LG Davis speak to a room full of private-sector manufacturing employees who built hardware for the Marine Corps Aviation. I was one of those employees. LG Davis shared the usual pleasantries - thanking us for the reliable, high-powered machines that we built. Expressing the importance of "battlefield readiness" and the role we played in that. Thanking us for our support of the troops. The lesson that stuck with me was LG Davis' response to a question -- as the person in charge of Marine Corps Aviation globally, how does he prioritize his time & resources? His answer was simple. "𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚, 𝙢𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛. 𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧." I've always admired the selflessness and discipline of the Marine Corps. The ability to prioritize the mission first, others second, and yourself last. Easier said than done. Please pray for me as I begin serving as the Wing Chaplain at Tinker Air Force Base tomorrow. I do not take this leadership position lightly, and feel overwhelmingly humbled at the trust the Air Force is placing in me. Please pray I can follow the guidance of a Chaplain, Colonel quoted in a paper on Wing Chaplain Leadership by Chaplain Dondi Costin from 2009: "With respect to how the Chaplain Corps does business, you will be well served to network, learn, and apply lessons that are working at other locations. Remember, Doing Global Ministry is a mindset, not a program. With respect to leadership, this is the true challenge: to put others before yourself, to use your position to serve others, to make others’ career progression more important than your own, to help your staff fulfill their hopes, dreams, and desires. May you always decrease that others may increase. Finally, and most importantly, don’t forget that your calling began by kneeling before the Master’s throne. Therefore, return to the throne often. Make an appointment to visit the Holy of Holies each day to refresh, restore, and receive your Air Tasking Order. It may sound obvious, but if you lose your spiritual focus, you will be ineffective as a wing chaplain. So, kneel in order to stand." (Link to paper in comments)

The last Presidential transition of the same party was when George H.W. Bush succeeded Ronald Reagan. Every transition since has involved an opposing party coming into office. Over that period there has, in my view, been an erosion in the continuity of government operations, exacerbated by political divisiveness and a lack of focus on what it means to govern. Experience, lessons learned, the standing intellectual capital of government is questioned and discounted by incoming administrations as line between campaigning and governing has become blurred. This issue was at the heart of this panel’s discussion. Since the governing capacity of administrations is, by definition, the outcome of a democratic process, the ultimate solution will lie with the voters. We are involved in the greatest civics lesson of our lifetime. The final exam is how we vote and what we demand from those who seek political office. I fear we have set the bar pretty low these days. Not necessarily for those running for office, but for ourselves and what we are willing to accept. Time to look in the mirror.

"Learning from the Past: A Lesson from General Douglas MacArthur" In the annals of leadership, few figures stand as tall as Douglas MacArthur. My Grandfather however referred to him as "bloodthirsty." As a young manager, I often sought out my grandfathers for advice on leadership and management. One day I asked: Should you speak up when your boss is headed down the wrong path, or simply follow their lead? His answer transported me back to MacArthur's bold move before the Philippine Islands campaign in 1944. Aboard the USS Louisville, he stood with Admiral Jesse Oldendorf and several high-ranking officers. MacArthur urged immediate action by Navy UDT teams, a deviation from the norm. The Naval officers resisted due to the potential loss of lives without a proper plan. The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, a fistfight between Navy and Army officers. The aftermath brought court-martials, penalized officers, and my grandfather dipping water out of the bilge pump with a teaspoon for 24 hours. In the end the Navy opted for a safer course, contrary to MacArthur's stance. Here's the takeaway my grandfather left me: Stand your ground, but do so strategically. Adhering to directions is essential, but it's your role as a leader to find a way to shift direction that doesn't result in failure for the team. If you stand firm, your team may lose their best ally. The celebrated “win” was Lt Gen Tullos recognizing a paper he co-authored on a recommended new global campaign approach. The paper was briefed to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Vice Chiefs of Staffs from all the services on June 2, 2023. What an amazing opportunity and accomplishment that is well worth recognizing! Title: "Adopting a revised planning model that incentivizes the continual pursuit of influence and leverage, will enable the Joint Force to secure advantage and the ability to shape conditions, bargain for desired outcomes, and deter aggressive intentions and actions.” Also of note: The patch says (loosely translated) “Progress unhindered by custom”.
