Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will disconnect their electrical grids from the Russian and Belarussian system (BRELL) in February next year, officials from the Baltic nations have confirmed. “The desynchronization process, which has lasted for almost 20 years, will come to an end in early August when the Baltics inform Russia and Belarus that they do not want to be part of the new annual period starting next February,” Estonia’s Deputy Secretary for Energy Jaanus Uiga told national media on Tuesday. The Baltic states will join the Continental European (UCTE) grid on Feb. 9, 2025, the day after disconnecting from BRELL. Desynchronisation was previously planned for the end of 2025. Energy customers are not expected to be impacted by the switch. Decoupling from the Russian and Belarussian grid, which is largely managed by Moscow, was declared a strategic objective by the Baltic nations’ prime ministers in 2007. At the moment, I am accompanying the Minister of Energy of Ukraine on a visit to the United States, where we are working on strengthening global energy security and Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration. Even with an intense schedule, I was able to record a video address on behalf of Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko to the participants of the conference "Ukraine: How to unleash investments in decentral energy solutions" in Brussels. Here are some of the key messages we are communicating to our partners and investors: • Ukraine is the first country that faces a new reality of modern terrorism – massive attacks against energy infrastructure. The lessons we are learning are not for Ukraine only, but for the whole world. • The EU, same as Ukraine that soon will become an EU member, are facing a common challenge. When energy systems in our countries were built, no one had an idea about the energy transition or massive drone raids. This is a new reality. And we have to adapt our policies to it. • We have to build a new carbon-free energy system to produce clean affordable energy for domestic use and for export. • In the years to come we will experience an “electricity revolution”. Centralized nation-wide energy systems of the past will transform into energy islands. More consumers will become prosumers that produce electricity for their own needs and sell the surplus. It will change the nature of electricity demand and consumer behaviour. • Our goal is to significantly increase the share of renewables in the energy mix by 2035. At the same time, each gigawatt of renewable electricity demands smart grids and storage solutions to prevent energy losses. It will demand greater investments. • We invite investors to be “early birds”. The war has speeded up decision-making processes in Ukraine, unlocked new opportunities to reap benefits of investing in a new decentralised energy system. • The Ukrainian government is doing its part of the job. Should Ukraine build new NPP units? I have always shared the opinion that Ukraine will not achieve the goals of energy transition and have sufficient capacities for the economy development without an increase in RES generation, construction of new NPP units and creation of modern manoeuvrable power generation and storage systems. Ukraine has lost about 16 GW of generation capacities as a result of the Russian aggression. One should also take into account that the service life of most thermal generation facilities has long expired. As the ex-Minister of Energy Ivan Plachkov aptly noted, our energy industry resembles a museum of technologies of the 1960s-1980s, like the Cuban car stock, demonstrating the achievements of the US car-making industry of the pre-revolutionary period. https://lnkd.in/eJsvSv8k

Baltic Countries Abandon Soviet-Era Power Grid by 2025 Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania announced today that they have communicated to Russia and its ally Belarus their intention to disconnect, from February 2025, from the electricity grid, which dates back to the Soviet era. The three Baltic countries, which for decades were part of the Soviet Union, but which are now part of the European Union and NATO, have thus taken an important step towards energy independence from Russia. These countries have had tense relations with Moscow since they regained their independence in the early 1990s, and these ties have deteriorated further since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. "We will cut the last energy connections with Russia," said Rokas Masiulis, director of Litgrid, the state operator of Lithuania's electricity grid, quoted by the AFP agency. The official indicated that in the next six months he will disconnect the Russian electrical grid and dismantle the last remaining electrical lines. Representatives of the Latvian operator AST and the Estonian Elering also announced this decision. In a statement, operator Elaring said that "the energy systems of the three Baltic states are already ready for emergency synchronization at any time, if necessary." Thus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will disconnect from the Russian network on February 7th, rejoining the European network two days later. Although they declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, their electricity grids remained linked to Russia and Belarus. Their frequency is therefore regulated from their headquarters in Moscow, meaning they still rely on Russia to guarantee a stable flow of electricity. The three countries decided in 2018 to synchronize their electrical grids with the continental European system, after obtaining financial support from the European Union. Ukrenergo has fulfilled key technical conditions to ensure permanent interconnection between the power systems of Ukraine and Europe. Today, on 28 November, ENTSO-E Regional Group Continental Europe confirmed the full implementation of the Catalogue of Measures by Ukrenergo, which means the completion of the synchronisation project between the Ukrainian power system and the Continental European network. “The Continental European TSOs are pleased to announce that Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian TSO, has achieved compliance with the key technical requirements necessary to enable a permanent interconnection between the power systems of Continental Europe and Ukraine,” ENTSO-E noted in an official statement. The technical requirements – the Catalogue of Measures – were outlined in the Agreement on Conditions for the Future Interconnection of the power system of Ukraine with the power system of Continental Europe, signed in 2017. The Catalogue contains more than 200 technical measures in nine areas. All these measures constitute an integral part of the Synchronous Area Framework Agreement for the Continental Europe (SAFA)*, which Ukrenergo also joins. The emergency synchronisation with the European power system took place on 16 March 2022 after three weeks of autonomous operation of the Ukrainian power system in the face of full-scale russian aggression. Thanks to close cooperation between the system operators of Continental Europe and Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian power system was interconnected with the European one 1.5 years ahead of schedule. “Since then, Ukrenergo has made extraordinary efforts, under difficult wartime conditions, to achieve full compliance with the operational rules,” ENTSO-E said in a statement. “We greatly appreciate today’s decision and I am sure that this achievement will help significantly increase flexibility and reliability of our grid operation, as well as create pre-conditions for expanding cooperation. This is the result of many years of persistent work, particularly challenging since the outbreak of the full-scale war. We are grateful to ENTSO-E for the continuous support and trust throughout this process,” said Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Management Board of Ukrenergo. “ENTSO-E welcomes the new level of cooperation between the Continental European TSOs and Ukrenergo. This development not only enhances regional energy security, but also promotes a more integrated and efficient energy market. It also underlines our ongoing efforts to ensure a resilient and integrated electricity network and to foster cooperation among European TSOs”, said ENTSO-E President Zbyněk Boldiš.

⚡️ Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has launched more than 5,000 missiles at Ukraine, 25% of them at energy facilities. According to preliminary estimates, the amount of damage caused to the Ukrainian energy infrastructure by a full-scale war equals $8.8 billion. With this money, Ukraine could build more than 5,000 MW of green capacities by 2030. 🟢 In order to restore the Ukrainian economy as soon as possible, we should consider the next steps and search for investments now.
