The Mathematics of Morality by Leaf: I recently completed an extremely interesting course, exploring everything effective altruism - using evidence and careful reasoning to take actions that help others as much as possible. Throughout the weeks, I acquired knowledge regarding the logic behind decisions we make day by day, applied complex theorems to make accurate estimates as well as quantifying 'what matters most.' It was satiating to discover the intricate AND applicable side of Maths, beyond the (dare I say) rigid scope of GCSE Mathematics which I've become so accustomed to. I'd recommend for all aspiring mathematicians and those wanting to explore STEM further to consider the ways in which you can use Maths to do the most good. As much as self-seeking success is a great thing, this course was a refreshing reminder of how we can all use our talents, most efficiently and economically, to better the lives of others (as well as ourselves.)

Sometimes, solutions to the most complex problems can be right under our nose. Teachers are in short supply. Specialist #teachers, like mathematics #teachers, are in even shorter supply, with a recent report from Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute suggesting one way to combat this growing problem is to train teachers up to teach maths — effectively transitioning ‘out-of-field’ teachers to be considered ‘in-field’. Their existing training and expertise in #pedagogy, combined with the mathematics knowledge and skill uplift provided, can equip them to teach the subject effectively and help plug the gap. The 2021 Australian Institute for Teaching & School Leadership (AITSL) National Teacher Workforce Characteristics Report on Australia’s teaching workforce found that 40% of those teaching high school mathematics are out-of-field (English and science were 28% and 29%, respectively). (Full report: https://lnkd.in/gPKZFBrz) While not the panacea for the #K12 teacher shortage more broadly, could this be one piece of the puzzle that #schools and school systems/districts might be able to lean into more? Math education is mired in its own institutionalized myopia. Content focus has become a poor understudy of pedagogy. Our inspirations should come from mathematics first, how to teach it second. Otherwise, the stories of mathematics/mathematicians get shaded into obscurity, and mathematics is peddled as a commodity/asset for a financial definition of success.

If you're broadly interested in learning, education, and related topics, this interview of Grant Sanderson (known for his math videos published as 3Blue1Brown on Youtube) by Dwarkesh Patel is well worth a listen! Some of the topics covered: - What's the best allocation of people with a knack for mathematics for the greatest broader impact (probably not all in academia)? - The ways teachers can impact their students, both positively and negatively, intentionally or not - Why some teaching and learning approaches work better than others https://lnkd.in/ez263wwK
