Gensler's latest global workplace research is published!!! This is not another RTO study, but explores what matters most to design the best workplaces for people. Less than a third of global workplaces have been redesigned in the last 3 years. As designers of impact, our goal was to identify what makes a high-performing workplace to not only inform future design, but measure the impact on people and business. This Gensler headline caught my eye - "2024: Year of the Intentional Workplace". It talks about not just making workplace design people-centric but creating workplace behaviours and policies that reflect an organisation's culture. Also it suggests experimentation is likely needed to match the 'experience' with employees' needs - so be prepared to adjust and flex based on the outcomes. Successful workplaces will be created by organisations that have a clear intent on offering "compelling destinations with a variety of inclusive workspaces where workers can focus, connect, and collaborate". How can organizations ensure that their physical and virtual workspaces reflect their culture, values, and business objectives with HR's guidance? During my stay in Japan from 2009 to 2013, I had the privilege of learning Hiroyuki Hirano's 5-S strategy. This approach advocates for creating a more effective workplace. Ever since then, I incorporated the principles of this strategy in every workplace I have been a part of. The goal is to ensure that the workplace is optimized effectively for maximum productivity. HR plays a key role in ensuring workplace designs are exactly what the teams need to be more effective. Here are some questions to think about when developing such designs: What are some key considerations HR should take into account when collaborating with designers to create employee-centric workspaces? In what ways can employee-centric design principles enhance creativity, productivity, and overall performance in the workplace? What are some potential challenges or barriers HR might face when spearheading workplace design initiatives, and how can they overcome them? How can organizations measure the success of their workplace design efforts in terms of employee satisfaction, engagement, and productivity? What role do you think workplace design plays in attracting and retaining talent in today's competitive job market? How can HR lead the way in shaping tomorrow's workplaces to foster collaboration, innovation, and well-being?
