How do you start your day?
What's the first thing you do when you wake up?
Do you eat breakfast?
Grab a cup of coffee?
Check your emails before you start work?
When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is pee, welcome to my 50's. I brush my teeth, kiss my husband, grab my computer and make a cup of tea.
I've always been the type of person to grab my computer first thing in the morning. I like to start my day prepared for what's ahead.
I realized today that in the past grabbing my computer had a huge sense of panic. Did someone send an email late last night that I missed? Did I get an answer from the team about the email I sent last night? Did the accepted offer come back?
It was sheer panic, my stomach was in knots as I opened my computer. In fact many days the mornings would bleed right into the afternoon and I wouldn't have moved from my spot at the kitchen table.
These days my mornings are quite different.
I'm super lucky. I work from home, I don't have a commute and I can take the first hour of my day to leisurely check my email. I can sit on my deck and drink my tea in the morning sun.
I know there are a lot of people who are hurting right now. Creative professionals that got laid off and are looking for work. It's scary to lose your job. I know, I've been there. No matter how much money you have in the bank it's an awful feeling to now know what's next. Will you find a job, how long will it take?
One thing I wish I had done was panic less and be grateful. The panic caused me so much stress, The stress took a toll on me. My deck has been there the whole time but I didn't take the opportunity to enjoy it.
It's important to keep your health up and maintain a routine when are looking for work.
▶ Take some time in the morning to breathe.
▶ Continue to move your body. Exercise releases endorphins which help reduce stress.
▶ Eat healthy meals to keep your energy up.
▶ Set an intention for the day. Maybe it's reaching out to 3 people you haven't talked to in a while to tell them you are looking for work. Maybe it's asking for informational interviews. Maybe it's doing a free training on LinkedIn. Maybe it's just connecting with a friend to say hello.
If you were laid off, I'm sorry. I see you, I've been there and I know it sucks.
