If you are young (and shy) #networking can be extremely challenging. I remember during a press junket organized by Anyiko Public Relations for Country Queen, a Kenyan film on Netflix, I met incredible casts and crew but I was too shy to speak to them. While I managed to interview Melissa Kiplagat, Vincent Mbaya, Nini Wacera, and Mumbi Kaigwa with the help of Netflix and Anyiko's team, I could not even start a conversation with fellow journalists who were around. I felt like a FAILURE. However, I promised myself to find means to make it work. Here is what I did; ✔ I started networking with my peers. Some would become bridges between me and the BIG people I wanted to meet/share a word with. ✔ I learned to build value before approaching anyone. This is an ongoing process. I am not yet there. ✔ I became selective on the kinds of Networking events I attended. For this, I would not only attend Arts and Culture events but also diversify to other fields as long as it had people who make things happen. The result is that I have connected with #genz professionals who are doing incredible work. But the most important thing is that I can rely on them to work on a project and that's just a HUGE plus for me. I made a commitment to create a space where young people can network with peers in the industry. Our first-ever Gen Z hangout is coming up on 16th September 2023. What field are you in? Back from Latin America 🛬 Do you have a job-thing for me? After four incredible months exploring the vibrant cultures and landscapes of Latin America - from learning Spanish in Guatemala to swimming with sea lions and sharks in the Galapagos - I'm back and ready to swap my backpack for a briefcase. Another day, another lesson. While 7/30 may feel a little cliche, it is timeless wisdom. We must continue building and nurturing relationships in our network. In today's fast-paced digital era, fostering genuine connections has become more important than ever. An interesting question for the group. Would anyone be surprised that I have to remind business owners that although they would never say those specific words to an employee, they might make those inferences in a moment of frustration? Small business owners are often challenged with balancing limited resources and a lack of training and support with the intention to support their team or staff with what would seem to be a simple request. The opportunity is that although we might have the best intentions, at times, particularly during times of stress or duress, we may not realize that the slight nuances in our messaging can be poorly interpreted or misconstrued, leaving the employee to make false assumptions. That then leads to poor outcomes that could have been averted with a better understanding of the situation or better communication. In an environment of a larger organization with sufficient staffing, adequate resources, and likely training and experience on how to manage such solutions, this is a non-event. However, small businesses that likely have little or potentially none of these resources, often feel trapped into making poor decisions or at minimum reacting poorly, leading to a less-than-desirable outcome.
