Your Team - Friends or Just Work Colleagues? Back in the early 1990s I received a brief from a leading CEO for a team building programme for their Board of Directors who were pretty dysfunctional as a team with a distinct lack of openness and trust and much political manoeuvring in play. The CEO told me that he didn’t think it was realistic that they could become friends but could I at least try to help them learn to get along better! I remember thinking that the CEO had set the bar pretty low but being quite new to the corporate world I thought maybe that was my own unrealistic expectations at play and maybe the corporate world wasn’t comfortable straying into friendship building territory and businesses just wanted people to get on enough to get the job done?! Now 30 years on I’m more than ever convinced that high performing teams and businesses do need to breakthrough to the level of friendship within key teams. In fact my experience of working with outstandingly high performing teams is that they are indeed very close to being a team of best friends! What do you think? Whether in life or business it’s great having friends around you when things are going well but will they still be there for you when things are tough and you’re struggling big time? Isn’t that a good marker of true friendship? In my work and life experience I have witnessed so many occasions when an individual is most in need of support that the majority of their so called friends seem to mysteriously vanish with perhaps if they are fortunate just one or two true friends stepping up for them. Can you relate? Having friends to celebrate your successes is a great boon but more importantly to have friends that have your back, believe in you and help you get back on your feet when you’re in a difficult place can make an incredible difference to getting your mojo and performance back where it needs to be. This past weekend, I got to witness something truly remarkable. My son's basketball team, who hadn't played together in over a year, reunited for a tournament and ended up winning it all! What amazed me the most was not just their skill, but their incredible chemistry on the court. Despite the long break and minimal practice together, the team clicked instantly. Passes were smooth, defenses were tight, and they seemed to read each other's minds. It was like they hadn't skipped a beat! Watching them play got me thinking about how essential team cohesion is, not just in sports but also in the workplace.
