In the past 28+ months, I've been working on a significant initiative at HouseCanary. What began as a simple slack message to Jeremy Sicklick evolved into a substantial project for both myself and the company. My journey started with ensuring our AVMs produced fair values, conducting a study, and crafting a white paper. It progressed to establishing standards for responsible AVM usage, presenting to housing regulatory bodies, contributing to AVM rule-making comment letters, and engaging with over 40 government entities and trade associations. Tomorrow, AVM industry leaders will convene to discuss the potential creation of a Standards Setting Organization to hold AVM providers accountable for the proposed rule-making's five factors: 1. Ensure high confidence in estimates. 2. Protect against data manipulation. 3. Avoid conflicts of interest. 4. Mandate random sample testing and reviews. 5. Comply with applicable nondiscrimination laws. I am optimistic that collaborative efforts within the industry will lead to the establishment of standards, promoting the safe use of AVMs in loan origination and secondary markets. More than 47,000 UK businesses start 2024 on the edge of collapse after critical financial distress jumps over 25% again. Begbies Traynor Group reported the levels of ‘critical’ financial distress jumped dramatically in Q4 2023, up 25.9% on the prior quarter (Q3 2023: 37,772), leaving more than 47,000 businesses near collapse in the UK at the start of 2024. This represents the second consecutive period where critical financial distress has grown by around a quarter. 539,900 UK businesses are now in ‘significant’ financial distress, 12.9% higher than Q3 2023 and 5.6% higher yoy (Q4 2022: 511,093). Serious concerns grow over the Construction and Real Estate sectors which still represent nearly 30% of all businesses in critical financial distress.
