Something incredible is brewing in Georgia, one of historical and cultural import— The Ocmulgee National Park & Preserve Initiative. Spearheaded by Macon and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, this initiative aims to establish Georgia's inaugural national park, with the revered Ocmulgee Mounds area as its focal point. 📜 Historical Significance: The Ocmulgee Mounds area, with a venerable history spanning over 17,000 years, is the cradle of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation's ancestral heritage. It is a collection of essential locations that are integral to the cultural narrative of this indigenous community. 💡 Rationale and Urgency: Beyond a mere conservation effort, the initiative is an urgent response to the threatened ancestral sites in and around the Ocmulgee Mounds area. Legislative approval would not only designate this locale as a national park but also encompass neighboring treasures such as the Bond Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. 🤝 Unprecedented Collaborative Management: Unlike other national parks, the Ocmulgee National Park & Preserve would involve the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in its management, marking the first time a tribe not currently residing in the area actively participates in overseeing a national park. This collaborative approach marks a shift from the traditional custodianship of national parks and indicates a more inclusive and evolved model of conservation. 🌿 Strategic Framework: The Ocmulgee National Park & Preserve Initiative hinges on a carefully constructed plan. Legislative approval is the initial milestone, followed by the required presidential endorsement. The proposed expanse of 3,000 acres encompasses the sacred grounds where the Muscogee (Creek) Nation erected seven distinctive mounds, including a towering structure reaching a height of 55 feet. 🔑 Societal and Environmental Impact: This would mark the establishment of the 64th national park in the United States. Additionally, this vision doesn’t stop at 3,000 acres. Plans are in place to potentially expand the park by an additional 50,000 acres—a testament to the gravity of the undertaking. This initiative represents a significant step towards recognizing and preserving indigenous history, fostering collaboration between communities and government, and ensuring that future generations can connect with the rich cultural tapestry woven into the land. Let's celebrate this monumental step towards preserving our shared history and fostering inclusivity in the management of our natural treasures! 🌟#OcmulgeeNationalPark #HerrmannGlobal #AGlobalPerspective https://lnkd.in/gFJFHWAC

Today we are thrilled to share the Coastal Wetlands Strategic Plan 2024, authored by Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture alongside ourselves and additional academic, nonprofit, NGO, state and federal, community, and Indigenous partners. Our hope is that this plan will generate momentum around a shared path forward to conserve healthy coastal wetlands in the North Pacific Flyway including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, for the benefit of birds, other wildlife, and people. The plan describes overarching conservation strategies, 35 very high-priority coastal species and 50 high-priority coastal species in addition to others, and associated population and habitat objectives for tidal wetlands, mudflats, sandspits, eelgrass meadows, freshwater wetlands, freshwater lakes, and bird-friendly working lands and waters. This plan also includes a list of knowledge gaps and acknowledges that additional and adaptive work is needed to build momentum, achieve objectives, and ensure that the best available information is guiding actions and investments. Biodiversity is the cornerstone of recovering the landscape that will support all life on the planet. We must be cognizant that this includes humans own survival.
"I choose to emerge from the ecological amnesia that afflicts me. I choose very large wildlands and welcoming home wolves and cougars and salmon. I choose closing some roads and tearing down some dams and letting some forests rest, recover, and grow old. I choose a future that is more wild, equitable, and just—for all forms of life." - Jon Leibowitz is Executive Director of Northeast Wilderness Trust. Thanks Jon for penning this essay and a big shout out to The Rewilding Institute for advocating for advancing continental-scale conservation in North America.

We are all signed up to 30 Days Wild with The Wildlife Trusts, starting tomorrow, 1st June. We have plenty of Wild Ideas as we embark on mobilising over £10 billion towards restoring Nature across the UK over the next decade. Join Rebalance Earth in sharing your Wild Ideas, Activites and Actions for #Nature. You can sign up here https://lnkd.in/eJUGbQq for free, for your home, your school, your care home, your business. Why not join your local Wildlife Trust for as little as £3 per month, to learn about Nature near you and support the dedicated teams helping Nature recover? Given the estimated £50-£100 billion required for Nature restoration in this period, we identify a significant opportunity to direct a portion of the £5 trillion in UK pension assets towards impactful investments in Nature. Specifically, a '2% for Nature' allocation could generate the necessary funds to redirect the flow of capital. Our 'Source to Sea' strategy takes a comprehensive landscape approach, engaging with public and private landowners to rejuvenate ecosystems from peatland springs to coastal waters. With a 15-year horizon, our fund is designed to deliver returns of 8% to 12% with impact mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, e.g. climate change, life on land, life below water and sustainable cities and communities. Our strategy aims to bridge the significant Nature deficit by expanding the demand side and enhancing the supply of nature-based solutions. We see five key benefits of restoring Nature at a landscape scale: • (1) reduced flooding, • (2) reduced drought, • (3) improved water quality, • (4) increased biodiversity and ecosystem health and • (5) carbon sequestration. These five key benefits are paid for by the companies who benefit from them. By embracing Nature as a Service (NaaS), we target business challenges for companies facing specific localised Nature-related risks and opportunities, e.g. reduced flood risk to their assets, thereby unlocking wider opportunities for corporate investment in Nature. What does collaborative conservation look like? 5,000 acres being permanently protected in northern Vermont! In partnership with Vermont Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy in Vermont, Northeast Wilderness Trust created Vermont's newest wilderness area, now called "Bear's Nest Wilderness Preserve." The 2,700-acre property, located in an important bi-national wildlife corridor, joins a growing number of places being protected as forever-wild across Vermont and New England by Northeast Wilderness Trust. The greater project also included 2,000 acres of managed woodlands that are now permanently conserved by Vermont Land Trust. Wildlands and Woodlands. We need both. #rewilding #wilderness Learn more below: https://lnkd.in/eHsB9GUr

Much of the West of the UK was long ago covered with temperate rainforest, a rare ecological landscape that was home to unique plant species. (For more info on this incredible, forgotten history, check out Guy Shrubsole's 'The Lost Rainforests of Britain', published by HarperCollins Publishers.) Today, less that 1% of Britain is home to ancient rainforest, so it is encouraging to read that a tract of Pembrokeshire, West Wales, will undergo a 100-year rewilding project to restore its natural abundance, with support from The Wildlife Trusts and funding from Business in the Community member Aviva. Ecological restoration and proactive rewilding are not only crucial for protecting the planet by reintroducing carbon capturing trees and plants, they can also play an important role in helping local #communities and places to connect with nature and the environment. https://lnkd.in/e78ndvwq
