When you put savings into your pension, how do you expect that money to be invested on your behalf? 💰 At the moment, pension funds are focused on making a financial return with our money. That is incredibly important of course, but ignores the impact that investment decisions have on factors critical to our future quality of life, such as the environment, the financial system and society. Many of us want not just to be able to fund our retirement, but to retire into a stable, healthy world. We want to be content in the knowledge that as we move towards retirement, we aren’t unwittingly investing into worsening climate change, human rights abuses or accelerating biodiversity loss. For this reason, ShareAction gave written evidence to parliament last week proposing changes to the law on fiduciary duty. We argue this is needed in order to support pension fund trustees’ ability to take real action to address sustainability risks and opportunities. In May 2023, a group of over 20 pension providers joined forces to form the Pensions Equity group to tackle the inequalities which exist within the UK's pensions system. In our latest edition of #Pensions Ombudsman Focus, we look at several recent complaints to the Pensions Ombudsman. These range from the first decision to consider the application of the 2021 Transfer Regulations to a decision considering the treatment of discretionary increases on buy out. We also cover a recent case in the Court of Appeal, which confirmed, for the purposes of recouping overpayments, that the Ombudsman is not a “competent court”.
