This is a problem! In partnership with NROC, Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs defied pandemic trends, significantly improving student readiness for college by implementing EdReady, a low-lift learning platform that utilizes a personalized, competency-based approach. A high school student asked, “what can I do to make sure your kids feel safe in our community?” Our answer was to BE THE ONE! Yesterday we let 1,300 high schooler students in on a little life lesson: 📢Adult life is a series of group projects, where are you rarely get to choose your partners. 📢 In our new high school presentation, we talked about preconceptions and first impressions, and how they inform our desire and willingness to try and connect with someone. We shared the stories of our lives, and how Emily-a self proclaimed “math nerd,” and Larkin- someone who loved school for the social aspect, ended up working together in a series of unexpected events. Never would we have worked together in high school, but life has its own plans for you and the best thing you can do is choose kindness in every situation. You could hear a pin drop as we told our stories to the crowd. 🥹Several students bravely raised their hands in the two assemblies of 650 students and said they were neurodivergent and appreciated the message to their classmates to “Just say hi and follow their lead.” As we continue to receive messages from students and parents, our hearts are full and we cannot wait to spread this message at Santa Rosa High School next week! Special thank you to Jos, Marion, Brady, Amanda and Ruby for helping us bring our point home. These high school students volunteered their time to help us gain a better understanding of what is needed to create a Community of Belonging in Sonoma County and beyond. Finding the right school is about so much more than just academic standards and test scores. It's about ensuring your child thrives in an environment that nurtures their unique talents, interests, and needs. That's why I put together these 8 thought-provoking questions. These questions are designed to spark deeper conversations and help you evaluate whether a school or learning community is truly the best fit for your whole child—intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Don't worry, these aren't meant to be "gotcha" questions to put schools on the defensive.
