Are you feeling isolated because of limited school community engagement? You may understand the importance of strong community ties in enhancing your school's reputation and attracting new students. Yet, despite your efforts, there may be a lack of reciprocation from the community. These are 2 popular methods that I have seen to be working: 1. Community Events and Partnerships Apart from conducting open houses and fests, do try engaging with the parents after these events. Get suggestions for improvements! Try working on collaborative events or projects with other businesses like STEM Education workshops, Community Health Fair, etc. 2. Leverage digital platforms! How will parents know about what is happening and what they are missing out on? Regular updates and interactive content can help foster a sense of belonging and involvement among community members. You measure what you care about. As much as running a social impact business is about taking action for the greater good, it's also about using data to deliver what people actually need. Late last year, we asked our newsletter readers, clients and community members, "How often do you participate in the civic process? (i.e. voting, participating on a board or calling your elected officials) 💡 - About 50% responded Rarely/Once per year - About 30% responded Occasionally/Few times a year, and - About 20% responded Regularly/Multiple times a year We then asked what barriers exist to prevent more participation. Some of the responses included: - Time. Only so much time in the day. - Time at work - Time. I am working on my Ph.D. - Time and other commitments mostly. Knowing my input or presence matters. - Childcare, affordable parking, accessible transportation - Initiatives being during work hours or not having childcare to fully participate 💡 So I ask myself, my Civility Localized team members, my clients and now you: How can we reduce these participation barriers in the short and long term so that more people can gain access to their government leadership, important community growth decisions and gain access to social capital? 🌍 Diverse Insights, Shared Goals: Reflections from Serious Fun's Children's Network Gathering 🌍 What a day it's been at the Gathering in Stamford, Connecticut! It's been an enriching experience filled with stories, global perspectives, and passionate individuals determined to make a difference in the lives of young people. I have had delicious conversations with our fellow keynote Laurie Browne and Steph Love, alongside fellow delegates about using data to inform decisions, policies, systems, structures and ecosystems of Camps and Campers. As I prepare to take the stage with Lerryn tomorrow, one question has been echoing in my mind: "Where does our responsibility begin and end when it comes to enabling and empowering young people to develop their own Youth Agency?" It's a question that resonates deeply with our mission at Participation People. Professor Laura Lundy's research provides valuable insights, yet there's room for more specificity, especially for sectors outside of youth development. It's a puzzle I'm determined to be curious and courageous about. Equally important is how we, as adults, decision-makers, and policy shapers, can step aside to allow young voices to flourish in ways that truly serve them authentically, meaningfully and collaboratively. This is the challenge I'm grappling with as I prepare for tomorrow's discussions with an asset-based mindset that places young people's ways of communicating at the forefront; finally, shifting the power paradigm towards equality of voice. I haven't found all the answers yet, but I'm excited to continue this exploration and share insights from our journey. The first day of #BICON2023 is done. It has been a great day with interesting and engaged speakers from many countries and backgrounds. Some thoughts from today: * A moderator reassured a care-experienced panel member that she could just use simple language, no need to use the complicated jargon of the experts. This is something that should be said to the experts more often. There's no problem with using jargon and acronyms as shorthand when you are among people fluent in their use. But any expert in alternative care and child protection reform would (hopefully) inevitably interact with people who are not experts: social workers, politicians, and communities who are new to the type of reform proposed, not to mention the families and the children themselves. The use of jargon should be avoided as much as possible. And it is always entirely possible. As has been said - not sure by whom, originally - if you are unable to explain it in simple language, you do not understand it well enough. Putting complex subjects into simple language is something I have always strived to do, and how rare that is, is illustrated by how often this gets pointed out, sometimes with astonishment. * It is wonderful to see the participation of young people with care experience being taken seriously and not used as a tick-box exercise at this conference. The young people have provided a lot of important insights today. Some of what they said also illustrated how much work still needs to be done to make sure that those with care experience are not made to internalise the effects of institutionalisation as personal flaws. Offhand remarks like 'many different placement, maybe because of my radical character' or 'not everyone is strong, some people need someone' show this. Being strong and not always needing someone are things that are developed through receiving responsive, reliable, nurturing care, denied to children in institutions. A lack that in turn is likely to breed a 'radical character' in order to survive. We need to work harder to make sure children and young people know that is not them, it is not failure. * Questions were raised about what is your hope for this BiCon and talking is not enough, who will do it? My hope is that this BiCon will help see the increasing momentum of care reform in Asia accompanied by a willingness to keep learning and discovering (who will do it? All of us) and provide training, staff, and funding to make implementation of often repeated recommendations possible (who will do it? Governments, donors, INGOs together). The learning needs to include a real understanding of the effects of trauma (and the inherently traumatic effect of institutionalisation) and how children and families can and must be supported to cope with and overcome them. As well as an understanding - through listening to - the specific needs of those with various overrepresented and marginalised backgrounds. https://lnkd.in/ei4hgqnT
