Recently I came across an advertisement for an Indigenous identified role that used the term "ATSI". I was shocked to see such a term used in 2024. Especially considering the background of the leadership and the purpose of the organisation (I have decided not to share the name of the organisation here). For me it is a red flag if an organisation uses the term "ATSI" and here is why "ATSI" is not acceptable in 2024. Using the term "ATSI" to refer to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is considered inappropriate, offensive and disrespectful because it reduces our rich diversity and distinct identities to a mere acronym. The abbreviation fails to acknowledge the unique cultures, languages, histories, and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, thereby homogenising our identities into a single, indistinct label. This simplification often perpetuates ignorance and misunderstanding about the profound differences and significance of each of our communities, undermining the respect we deserve as distinct sovereign peoples. What's more using "ATSI" is perceived as a continuation of colonial attitudes that historically sought to erase or minimize Indigenous identities and cultures. You can't espouse to support self determination and the Uluru statement and use the term "ATSI". It strips us of our agency to self-identify. By being more sensitive and informed and using respectful language, such as "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," it shows greater recognition and respect for our individual and collective identities, fostering better understanding - perhaps even reconciliation. This approach aligns with broader efforts to acknowledge and rectify past injustices, promoting a more inclusive and respectful dialogue about Indigenous peoples in Australia. Even if you have a character limit. Please don't use "ATSI" 🙏🏽 #AstiOffensive #RespectCultures #InsensitiveMarketing #OffensiveContent #DiversityMatters #CulturalSensitivity #Inclusivity #StopStereotypes #EthicalBranding

For South Asian Heritage Month, we spoke to our colleagues Tauseef and Elisha about what their South Asian heritage means to them and why it's so important for us to mark the month here at Progress Housing Group and RWP (Reside With Progress) 🔹 Hi Tauseef and Elisha! What keeps you connected to your Heritage? Elisha: The language and music! Despite being born in the UK, Punjabi is my first language. My dad knew I would learn English at school and use it throughout my life, but he was worried I wouldn’t be able to communicate with my family in India if I didn’t learn the language. It's so nice to meet other Punjabis from around the world and instantly connect based on our shared love of Punjab. Tauseef: I think my religion is a big part of keeping me close to my culture and heritage. Also, being with my family and friends too, as we celebrate them together. I must say, I find the food is always a great way to share with family and friends and sharing food has started many interesting conversations in the office. 🔹 How can people support South Asian Heritage Month? Elisha: Take some time to understand more about the culture. For a young person trying to navigate through life, there is enough confusion without having to figure out if your culture/cultural beliefs fit the ‘norms’ of society. Tauseef: There is also a lot of information on the SAHM website https://lnkd.in/dB9h7VnB 🔹 What conversations have you had with others inside or outside of work around South Asian Heritage and culture? Tauseef: Our Roots Network discusses race and identity and how we can better celebrate our different cultures at the Group. Elisha: Outside of work, I am always advocating change and reach; anything is achievable if you work hard enough. South Asian representation has grown enormously, and it is important for young people to continue seeing the ‘first’ South Asian in many roles now becoming the norm. We recognize Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions that generations of Americans from Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander backgrounds made to our nation's history, society and culture. Bayer’s Business Resource Group BASIA (Bayer Asian Society Inclusion Alliance) theme for this year’s #AANHPI celebration is embracing resilience. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to challenging life experiences, primarily through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. The American story, a testament to resilience and strength, is intricately woven with the voices and legacies of AANHPI individuals. Their contributions have been instrumental in building and uniting our country. By embracing their resilience, we can draw inspiration to overcome life's challenges and emerge stronger. #TeamBayer

AAPI Community Breaking Stereotypes 💪 Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are a vibrant and diverse community, contributing to the rich cultural mosaic of America. They hail from a vast region that spans from the bustling cities of East Asia to the serene islands of the Pacific. This group is breaking stereotypes and forging new paths in various sectors: Chloe Zhao has made her mark in Hollywood, becoming the first woman of color to win an Oscar for Best Director for her movie Nomadland, highlighting her unique storytelling perspective. Prabal Gurung brings a fresh voice to the fashion industry, infusing his Nepalese heritage into modern designs that challenge traditional norms. Jeremy Lin has left an indelible mark on sports, transcending the basketball court to address issues of racism and representation. The AAPI community’s journey is one of perseverance, innovation, and celebration. From Chloe Zhao’s cinematic triumphs to Prabal Gurung’s fashion revolutions, and Jeremy Lin’s advocacy in sports, they have all paved the way for a future where diversity is not just accepted but embraced and honored. Their stories are not mere chapters in history but ongoing narratives that inspire and challenge us. They remind us that the American dream is a tapestry woven from threads of many cultures, each strand strengthening and enriching the whole. As the AAPI community continues to grow and thrive, their contributions will undoubtedly shape the fabric of American society for the better, ensuring that the nation’s future is as vibrant and dynamic as the community itself. Their legacy is a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of unity in diversity, and a celebration of the human spirit’s boundless potential. 🌅 Wen Stenger 🏳️🌈 Balaji Thiagarajan TechDigital #AAPIExcellence #AAPIHM #AsianAmericanPacificIslandersHeritageMonth #AAPI #DiversityInAction #Trailblazers #UnityInDiversity #Inspiration #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion
