Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you decide to purchase through one of the links, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. 1) Larry McMurtry: Lonesome Dove (1985) One of the most iconic sagas about the Old West, this Pulitzer Prize-winner follows the adventures of ex-rangers Gus and Call as they go on one last cattle drive. However, the book is more than just the story of a cattle drive; it’s homage to a fading frontier, true brotherhood, and the enduring cowboy spirit. If you only read one Western novel in your life, make it this one. Hi Friends! OUR NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-SALE, LOST IN THE ZOO BY ASHLEY NELLY AND SARAH SMITH. It’s finally here! Our second children’s book in our series The Adventures of Bay & Breezy, Lost in the Zoo is now available for early access purchase. A large publisher press roll out will happen in a few weeks on the official April 23 launch date! The Adventures of Bay & Breezy is a series of children’s books about two fun-loving, often mischievous, biological Dudley Labrador sisters. While taking their third nap of the day, Bay and Breezy are awoken by their favorite mailman. Ready for adventure, the sisters escape to the zoo where they meet and admire the other animals. Nearly out of time, they race home before their mom and dad discover they are missing. Once again, they are snug on the couch after a dream day. But wait, was it a dream day or only just a dream? Featuring gorgeous watercolor drawings that illustrate what it means to possess an adventurous spirit, Lost in the Zoo reminds young children to never stop dreaming…or napping. Please help us make the New York Times Best Seller List. Visit @nellylabsisters or @swsdesignco to learn more. Available for pre-sale now via the Amazon link. It’s been a wild ride, THANK YOU for supporting us – we hope you love the book as much as we do! #books #childrensbooks #watercolorillustration #lostinthezoo #dogbooks #labrador #adventuresbaybreezybook @palmettopublishing @swsdesignco @nellylabsisters @ashnelly75 Sarah W Smith Your friends, Ashley & Sarah https://lnkd.in/gxHW9EpR

New York City, Jersey’s Union City, Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles and many others have their own unique set of provincial colloquialisms (jargon and slang to us guys). If anyone is thinking about writing a novel that takes place in Chicago, you’re in luck. Having mostly grown up in and around the city, I have compiled a tiny dictionary of local terms and expressions to help your character dialogue become more authentic. Like most hometowns, you won’t find this slang anyplace else in the country. So, in no particular order, here goes. CLOWNS – A group of people, usually with something in common, but not necessarily. “How do I get a hold of those clowns down the block?” GOAT RODEO – An old-fashioned shit-show where kids are trying to act like grownups. The image of children riding goats instead of horses is an image you cannot un-see. “The company I’m working for is a real goat rodeo.” SAMMICH – I bet you don’t believe this word really existed, but it does. “Gimme one of dem I-talian sammiches with peppers. Oh, and dip it in dat dere sauce.” WASHROOM – We don’t go to the bathroom or the powder room in Chicago. We go to the washroom. “I gotta go to the washroom really bad. Which way is it?” YOUS GUYS – Refers to the people to which you are speaking. “Hey what are yous guys doin’ tonight?” FRUNCHROOM – In English, this translates to the front room, or what normal people call the living room. “You can’t eat supper in the frunchroom.” Full story here: https://lnkd.in/eRwr9TJx #paulhollis
