Actions speak louder than words.
After my last posts on the female funding gap, I have been in contact with so many amazing female founders.
I've scheduled more than 25 meetings over the next 3 weeks, and I'm committed to making 1-2 investments over the summer and 5 investments in female-led startups by the end of the year.
One female founder, Claudia Nassif, went a step further than just reaching out… 🙏🏻
Claudia provided me with a list of actionable suggestions (for male angel investors!) on how to support women who are fundraising:
➡️ Take meetings with female founders, even if their business is outside your usual investment scope.
➡️ Stay curious; women founders may have surprising insights to offer. (Definitely true!)
➡️ Ask positive, supportive questions.
➡️ Invite women founders into your network and engage with their posts. They will likely reciprocate and help you connect with other female founders.
➡️ Make warm introductions. Even one can make a big difference.
➡️ Carefully track and analyze your deal flow regarding female founders.
➡️ Explore opportunities beyond B2B SaaS. Many women are active in deep tech, green tech, and consumer-facing businesses.
➡️ Join transparency initiatives to combat unconscious bias.
➡️ Explicity encourage female and underrepresented founders to apply for funding, especially if all your co-investors are male and white.
➡️ Incentivize all-male founding teams in your portfolio to add female cofounders, even at later stages. This will make these companies healthier and create a greater pull effect.
➡️ Never blame women for the funding gap.
Yes, there are fewer women starting companies, fewer women in certain industries, and fewer women showing the same level of aggressiveness and optimism as men. This is due to decades of structural discrimination and education.
Every female founder sitting in front of you who decided to start a business against all odds is probably hungrier, grittier and more resilient than the average male founder.
Ladies, let's go! 🚀
P.S. Please reshare if you find this insightful, more male investors need to see this…
