There has never been more parity in the world of #BigLaw. While the lion-share of the global market is still dominated by many of the usual suspects, the evolution of the legal market over the past few years has allowed many additional firms to realize growth at an astonishing pace and scale.
These ambitious players have ranged from Vault-20 firms to mid-market teams that use lower rates, more collegial environments and at-or-near market comp to lure away top-of-market talent and punch above their weight.
The latest firm to unveil its plans for U.S. growth is a long-time staple of the international legal market - Norton Rose Fulbright. This is a firm that broke into the U.S. market via merger with Texas-based Fulbright & Jaworski in 2013 (and which has since leveraged the latter's positioning in the Texas market to become a force in the U.S. #energy and #renewables space), but that has since remained relatively small in terms of headcount across U.S. offices.
What we've learned from the BigLaw arms race to secure rainmaking attorneys over the past year is that many firms are adopting a very simple philosophy: increased scale = increased revenue. That means allocating huge amounts of resources towards increasing the number of talented (key word) attorneys among a firm's ranks.
Norton Rose's Texas-based U.S. managing partner 𝐉𝐞𝐟𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐲 seems to concur: “𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴.” Per Cody, Norton Rose - which currently sits at about 850 lawyers across its U.S. offices - is on pace to reach about 900 by year's end, with the goal of hitting 1,000 by the end of next year.
We've seen this model of rapid growth via aggressive talent acquisition work in the past, and it already seems to be tracking at Norton Rose, who saw a 13% revenue increase last year and what projects to be even better 2024. If this trend continues, it should be very exciting to see where NRF finds itself come New Years 2026!
