What 8 years in PRISON taught me 😳
Now that I have your attention: At 18 years old I went to work for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and volunteered to work in a maximum security psychiatric unit (PAMIO-Program for the aggressive mentally ill offender). I did 5 years in this unit and then promoted to Sgt. having front line supervision of 65+ officers at a medium security woman’s facility.
So what did I learn and how does it apply to leadership and business?
1) RESPECT is everything. Respect those around you, respect the system, respect unwritten rules, and respect yourself enough to handle any and all situations that will arise with strength and integrity.
2) FIRM BUT FAIR just works in all areas of life, business, leadership, families, etc…Understanding and setting boundaries, holding yourself accountable first then others around you second, ensuring nobody around you has to guess what you’re thinking or where you stand, and treating others with grace, compassion, and understanding.
3) FEAR doesn’t have to control you. Business, sales, financially, family hardships, unhealthy habits, situations and circumstances….Fear, worry, and anxiety are choices that you can control. Never let them see you sweat. This is also the perfect opportunity to lean on your faith.
4) LIVE IN THE SOLUTION, NOT THE PROBLEM: It’s easy to live in doubt, uncertainty, and self pity, when problems arise. Stop it….self awareness, recognition, and action on the solution is key.
5) LASTLY, Always, always.. avoid shank fights! 😳🤪
