Big news! The University of Stuttgart and Hewlett Packard Enterprise have announced an agreement to build two new #supercomputers at HLRS. In the first stage, a "stepping stone" #supercomputer called Hunter will begin operation in 2025. Based on the HPE Cray EX4000 supercomputer, Hunter will use AMD Instinct™ MI300A accelerated processing unit, which combines CPU and GPU processors and high-bandwidth memory into a single package. Hunter will both support HLRS’s system users in transitioning to exascale computing, and will greatly reduce energy consumption at HLRS.   This will be followed in 2027 with the installation of Herder, an #exascale system that will provide a significant expansion of Germany’s national high-performance computing (#HPC) capabilities within the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing.    The new systems will offer researchers world-class infrastructure for simulation, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance data analytics (HPDA) to power cutting-edge academic and industrial research in computational engineering and the applied sciences. A new approach, called Simultaneous and Heterogenous Multithreading (SHMT), developed by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, in the US, can double the processing power of existing device without adding new hardware. They demonstrated the SHMT framework using a multi-core ARM processor, an NVIDIA GPU, and a Tensor Processing Unit hardware accelerator. When tested, the approach delivered a 1.96 times increase in processing speed and a 51 percent reduction in power consumption without upgrading the hardware. Potentially huge news for computing! A new room-temperature superconductor has been replicated twice. Superconductors have long been sought after for turbocharging computation speeds. But until now, they’ve been incredibly hard to make, requiring temperatures near absolute zero. So when a team from Korea University announced they created a superconductor that functioned at room temperature, the tech community was excited, if highly skeptical. Physicist Michael Norman wrote: “The way they’ve presented some of the data is fishy.” But recently, two research teams have replicated the findings. Chinese researchers with the Huazhong University of Science and Technology even posted a video showing the Meissner effect—the expulsion of a magnetic field due to the superconducting process.  Still, keep watch on this developing story!
