Do you have a favourite sports documentary? OnePoll’s latest research for Pitch and Betfair revealed Brits favourite sports documentaries with ‘Beckham’ taking the lead. ‘Senna’ and ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ are also amongst the top 10 when it comes to Brits favourite sports documentaries. Our study of 2000 adults found that one in five people said sports documentaries are their go-to Saturday night watch. We discovered, 'The Last Dance' - the series about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls that inspired a new wave of basketball fans – only made it to 14th place. ⚽ 19% say that sports docs take centre stage for a Saturday night binge. 🏀 60% owned up to the guilty pleasure of watching a sporting documentary, even those who admit they couldn't care for sport. 🏎️ Brits named football and F1 as the two sports they want to see documentaries about the most. Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: 'It's clear that we're a nation of sports documentary lovers. They are fast becoming the new 'go-to' for Saturday night viewing, bringing the same levels of drama and intrigue as some of the nation's favourite soaps.’ We also found that nine different sports were represented in Britain's top 20 documentaries in the genre. Alongside documentaries on football, F1, and basketball, there was room in the top 20 for shows about snooker, tennis, cycling, cricket, golf, and cheerleading. 👉 Did you know that Sweden public broadcaster SVT has a policy of gender-balanced media coverage in sports? 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ ⚽ With Sweden overtaking US in the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ , here a report (see and download 👇 )by Eurovision Sports, from European Broadcasting Union (EBU), that highlights the job of SVT in Sweden (and other broadcasters in Europe) in promoting women sports 🏃♀️ In 2015, the women content in sports was 20-25% in #SVT. Nowadays they have gender-balanced content. Since they started, the traffic to their website has increased by over 100% and the interest in women’s leagues in Sweden has increased by 100% since 2014. 📲 In their social media channels, 52% of content is women sports, and they have also parity off-screen: 45% women 55% men in the staff, 50-50% as commentators (Data of 2019) I was glad to hear the story of gender-balanced media coverage from Åsa Edlund Jönsson, who was Head of Sports at SVT- now in the Swedish Olympic Committee and an outstanding speaker- at Stockholm School of Economics.

⚽ SPORTS AND GEOPOLITICS 🌏 𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘵 Ö𝘻𝘪𝘭, 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘻𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘺𝘨𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘴 It’s not common to see famous sports stars show up and speak or act to defend the rights of ethnic minority populations. The story I am going to tell you today gives us some hope in this sense. In 2019, Mesut Özil took to social media to express his support for the Uyghurs, drawing attention to their plight. He criticized the silence of Muslim countries on the issue, urging the global community to raise awareness about the situation in Xinjiang. In 2020, Antoine Griezmann made a significant move by cutting ties with Huawei, citing allegations that the tech giant supports the surveillance of the Uyghur people. His decision to end his sponsorship deal was a powerful statement against human rights abuses. 𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑼𝒚𝒈𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒔? The Uyghurs are a predominantly Muslim Turkic ethnic group in Xinjiang, China. They have their own distinct culture and language, which sets them apart within the broader Chinese national landscape. Reports and investigations have revealed concerning actions by China against the Uyghurs, including mass detentions, surveillance, and allegations of human rights violations. These measures have been widely criticized by the international community. 𝑺𝒐, 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒂 𝒅𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔? The narrative used by Beijing is to fight terrorism. However, the main goal for China is to assimilate this population and make them as close as possible to the dominant Han Chinese culture. This includes efforts to diminish Uighur language, religion, and cultural practices. China undertakes these actions because it considers itself an empire. The translation of its native name in Chinese, Zhongguo (中國), means "Middle Kingdom." Historically, empires have used assimilation as a tool to consolidate national unity, often at the expense of minority cultures and identities. This strategy is rooted in the belief that a singular national identity can strengthen state control and reduce dissent. However, such practices have been widely condemned for eroding cultural diversity and violating human rights. Xinjiang's geopolitical significance lies also in its location and resources. It's a strategic region on the Silk Road Economic Belt, rich in natural resources like oil and gas, making it crucial for China's economic and political interests. The stands taken by Griezmann and Özil underscore how sports figures can use their platforms for advocacy, drawing global attention to critical issues like the situation of the Uyghurs. Their actions remind us that sports can be a powerful vehicle for change and awareness.
