Onboarding Tip #4: Maximize the First 90 Days When you started in your current role, did you have a strategy to maximize your first 90 days? How did it go? Was there anything standing in your way toward a successful start? In his book, The First 90 Days, Harvard Business School professor and founder of Genesis Advisers, Michael Watkins, presents a road map for taking charge in the first 90 days of a new leadership position. Watkins states that this critical period of a “leadership transition” will define whether a leader fails or succeeds in their new role. If you are promoting someone from within or onboarding a new hire from the outside, it would make sense to do what you can to help facilitate a strong start from the end of the first week through the conclusion of their 90-day evaluation. It could mean the difference between success and failure for your new leader, as well as determine how quickly you’ll need to go through the hiring process once again. The first 90 days is an incredibly valuable, but often neglected, period in your new teammate’s tenure at your church. Take advantage of their outside perspective, help them set healthy rhythms, and follow through on the commitments made during the interview and onboarding process. And while Watkins’ book is written to the new leader, reading through his 10 principles to discover how you can reduce friction and remove barriers to a successful first 90 days for your new teammate can have a more lasting impact than you might imagine.
