While opioids are often prescribed to manage pain, holding on to unneeded prescription opioids can endanger household members with dependency and overdose. The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities State Opioid Response worked with Rescue to develop an opioid disposal campaign called “Toss it”. The opioid epidemic has affected countless lives and prompted many states to take action. In response, laws have been passed to regulate the dispensing of opioid prescriptions. Some states now require pharmacists to check prescription drug monitoring programs before dispensing opioids to ensure patient safety and prevent addiction. These regulations may add an extra step, but they are essential for protecting patients and fighting the opioid crisis. As pharmacists, we have a responsibility to stay informed and comply with these laws to help combat the epidemic. 🌐 For more information, click the link in the bio. #RPHBuddy #OpioidEpidemic #PatientSafety #PharmacyLaw

A report from last year sheds light the concerning discrepancies we are seeing in substance use trends. According to the American Medical Association’s Overdose Epidemic Report 2023, opioid prescriptions have decreased for the 13th consecutive year, while overdose and death related to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine have increased. This disconnect between medically legal administration of opioids and illegal acquisition of the these substances highlights the critical need for continual education around substance misuse - especially for younger generations. #workplacewellness #substanceuse #substanceabusedisorder #elearning #employeeeducation #employees #hr #BrainHealth #Opioids
