I empower students to make healthy decisions about alcohol, electronic cigarettes, marijuana and other drugs. I educate on brain development, dealing with peer pressure, and improving self-esteem all without lecturing!
As a parent, your first priorities are protecting your children’s safety and health. When it comes to talking about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, it’s best to have conversations early. That’s because your children are still maturing and learning how to make healthy decisions, all while being exposed to these substances and influenced by their friends, peers and social media. But the truth is that you, as a parent, are their biggest influencer. They look to you for guidance, and they listen to you too. More than 80% of kids surveyed ages 10 to 18 say their parents are the leading influence in their decisions and attitudes toward alcohol and other drugs. Starting a conversation about these topics can be awkward – for you and your kids. Here are a few suggestions. 1. Your child will have questions. Make sure you know the facts about whatever you’re talking about so you can be a trustworthy source of information. If children and teens don’t get the right information from you, they could possibly get misinformation somewhere else, like from their friends, the internet or social media. 2. It’s okay not to cover everything in one sitting. Aim for short, frequent talks and check in with your child regularly. Brainstorm “exit plans” together so they’re ready to make good decisions when it matters most. As they get older, your child’s attitudes, friend groups and stressors will change, so it’s important to keep these conversations going throughout their teen and young adult years too. 3. Besides asking open-ended questions that get responses other than yes or no, try using some of these phrases to extend conversations. “What do you think?” “Why is that important to you?” “Where did you learn about that?” “What else can I do to help?” What prevention efforts does your school have in place? Let's put together a school specific parent meeting. I am currently accepting schools for fall 2024. If you know of a school community that may benefit from community specific drug prevention education, have them contact me ASAP! My calendar for fall 2024 has started to fill up with three, four and five day programs!! Contact me today for the best choice of remaining available dates!! #students #health #education #educators #parenting #independentschool

Effct.org’s work to fight teen vaping in partnership with Summit County, Colorado has returned impressive results. The Healthy Kids Colorado Survey recorded a 39% drop in vaping from 2019 to 2021. In recent years, a dangerous trend has emerged in Colorado. The state led the nation in youth vaping, with Colorado’s Summit County seeing alarming rates of use. In 2017 in Summit County, 40.6% of high school students reported vaping in the past 30 days, whereas the statewide tally for teen vaping was 27.0%. As a result, Summit County, Colorado is working to reach the youth in their community with a message that gets them to stop - or never even start - vaping. Effct.org has been a crucial part of this work, creating and managing an awareness campaign that drives behavior change throughout Summit County. By sharing genuine stories from their peers about the harms of vaping, we’ve crafted a relatable, down-to-earth campaign that convinces Summit County’s youth to remove this harmful habit from their lives. Alongside these stories, our team also promotes various alternatives to vaping and resources for quitting. We’re thrilled that our contributions to Summit County’s mission are making meaningful change. Take it from Becky Peltier, Health Prevention and Promotion Specialist in Summit County: “Effct.org’s dedication and professionalism has helped Summit County achieve remarkable results in our fight against teen vaping and adult nicotine use. Their impactful media campaigns contributed to a healthier future for youth and adults in Summit.” We’re also proud to say that, alongside Summit County, our combined efforts won the 2022 Communicator Award for Online Advertising & Marketing! While there’s already been a massive decline in Summit County’s vape use amongst teens, we’re continuing our work to put an end to youth vaping once and for all! #digitalmarketing #publichealth #saynotovaping

Teens vaping is problematic everywhere, as evidenced by this news report from Australia: "Frequent teen vaping might boost the risk of exposure to lead and uranium, potentially harming brain and organ development, suggests research published online in the journal Tobacco Control...Vaping is popular with teens. In 2022, an estimated 14% of United States high school students-around 2.14 million - and more than 3% of middle school student, around 380,000 - reported vaping in the preceding month, note the researchers. This has created a hornets' nest of challenges for school officials. Fortunately, there are resources such as Soter Technologies' #FlySense vaping detection devices, which notify school officials - in real time - when vaping (and/or bullying) is taking place in areas such as restrooms where recording devices are not an option due to privacy issues. ★ Derek Peterson ★ #novaping #vapinginschools #stopthevape

🤔 How do you convince teenagers to quit vaping? This was the question at the heart of our mission when we joined the anti-tobacco coalition in Summit County, Colorado, a community once leading the state with a shocking 41% teen vaping rate (2017 Health Kids CO survey). Thanks to the community's efforts, that rate is now 16% -- well below the state average! The determination of Summit County to band together against this issue has been inspiring. It takes a village, and Summit is proving just that. 🚀 We launched the 'Vaping Sucks' campaign and the dedicated website, VapingSucks.org to help youth hear from their peers about why they don't vape or how they're quitting. The website and social media channels are packed with great testimonies as well as resources in the community to help youth. We've loved connecting with youth themselves. Hearing from teenagers like Doussaba, who never started vaping, to Ben, who's courageously battling his addiction, emphasized the need for an inclusive, positive behavior-focused campaign. 📊 In 2022 alone, our campaign performance: - Earned 5 million impressions 🌐 - Logged an average site time of five minutes - a remarkable number for a youth-focused campaign ⏰ - Culminated in a Communicator Award for our efforts 🏆 We know we're only part of the equation, and that there's more work ahead, as youths continue to be drawn to Big Tobacco as well as struggle with mental health issues and other challenges. We're excited to continue partnering with Summit County to make a healthier and happier community for young people. 🔗 Want to learn more about our campaign and its impact? Back to School, Not to #JUUL 🚭 This is the story of three incredible MoMs who took on JUUL Labs in 2018 to protect their and America’s children from the talons of Big Tobacco. Now a parent advocacy group with support teams spanning virtually every State in the U.S. PAVe is a one-stop grassroots organization that’s become a national resource for anyone with questions, in need help or interested in learning about the power of nicotine addiction and it’s impact on kids in Middle and High School. PAVe is a parents’ go-to safe place and space to discuss all things KiDs vaping e-cigarettes. I’m beyond honored to be a PAVe parent, and advocacy partner with these PAVe MoMs. Incredible what’s been accomplished, but our job as parents protecting children is far from over. Kids are still vaping nicotine in record numbers. Our nation’s LAX legislation, regulation, enforcement on the local, state, national level is daunting. Virtually nonexistent oversight has allowed these Machiavellian tobacco and vape companies to create new devices, products and pathways to attract, addict new and young nicotine consumers. FDA loophole(s) have enabled tobacco companies (and their lobbyists) to continue their stealthy efforts to addict this and the next generation of children and users to nicotine. Nicotine is a gateway drug that when consumed by children severely impacts their brain development and lung health. Cheers to Meredith, Dorian and the PAVe team 👏🏻 These folks won’t give up until JUUL et al is out of the picture and systems are in place to (finally!) protect the Public Health and well being of our nation’s youngest citizens. Teens are more likely to experiment with substances and Zyn is starting to show up more and more in schools. I was recently asked by Parents Magazine for some perspective on the matter. And if you're unfamiliar with it, this article does a great job of breaking it all down. #teenmentalhealth #teencoaching #parentingteens #parentingteenagers #selfconfidence
