The next generation of technology needs to have diversity built into its foundation. "All platforms and tools should be trained from complete, racially inclusive, and culturally accurate data, or else we will [perpetuate] the bias issues that our larger society currently faces,” #ai #tech #diversity

“If you ask the model generally who are some of the most important artists in our culture, it will give you Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo,” Pasmore said. “It’s not going to say anything about India or China, Africa, or even African Americans, because it has a bias that is focused on the European trajectory of history.” Traditional AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, often struggle with cultural nuances and exhibit biases towards Eurocentric and Western perspectives. This has led to the development of specialized AI models that cater specifically to the unique needs of these communities. John Pasmore, a seasoned AI entrepreneur, launched Latimer. Similarly, Erin R. created ChatBlackGPT™, a chatbot focused on Black culture, and Tamar Huggins founded Tech Spark AI, an AI platform designed for Black and brown students. These initiatives aim to address the gaps left by mainstream AI models, which often fail to capture the intricacies of African American and African cultures. In Africa, the challenge is even more pronounced due to the continent's linguistic diversity, with over 2,000 languages and dialects. #AI #InclusiveAI #CulturalAI #TechForGood #AIForAll #TechDiversity #Tech Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dM6KBwzu

The ultimate consumer truth about AI: "People don't want to see AI, they want to feel it." I know this because two years ago we were predicting the future of today. In 2021, we were fortunate enough to work with the incredible team at Prolego to help write "AI Natives Among Us", and in that extensive consumer and business study we learned 2 things: 1) AI Natives differ from the the Digital Natives that came before them in one very specific way - whereas Digital Natives looked to tech and said, "Look at all of the things I can do now!", AI Natives look to tech and say, "Look at all of the things I *don't* have to do now!" 2) Companies that invest AI in enjoy a huge halo effect. People think those companies are more innovative, focused on long-term success, have a positive impact on society, and care about their customers. Companies see AI as a technology, but consumers see AI as a way of life. These insights came before chatGPT or Midjourney had spread like wildfire. In 2021, people were already well on their way to collaborating with AI in invisible ways. I even remember an interviewee that said she traveled to Hawaii with her Google Home because she needed to be able to talk to it on vacation. AI Natives already have certain relationships and feelings that can tell us where the culture of AI is headed. You can download the report here: https://lnkd.in/gDwafbXA. And I highly recommend following Prolego's founder Kevin Dewalt on LI and Youtube if you work in AI. Nobody has his insights. #brandstrategy #ai #culture

Tracking Chat-Based AI Tool Adoption, Uses, and Experiences In this thought-provoking Substack post, Matt Motyl, Ph.D., a Senior Advisor of the Neely Center, Jimmy Narang, a Neely Center postdoc, and Nathanael Fast, Director of the Neely Center delve into the nuances of AI adoption and its ethical implications. The article reveals that while only 18% of US adults currently use chat-based AI, interest and utilization are growing rapidly, driven largely by curiosity. Matt's insights bring to light the dichotomy in public perception: the majority find these applications useful, yet about half of the US adult population harbors concerns about potential harm. These apprehensions stem from the observation that AI models, like ChatGPT, often mirror societal norms, which can include discriminatory or prejudicial elements. https://lnkd.in/g96MgNhU #NeelyCenter #NeelyCenterForEthics #NeelyIndices #EthicalLeadership #AIEthics

The release of ChatGPT in November 2022 unleashed a frenzy surrounding generative artifical inteligence (AI), resulting in the exponential growth and development of the emerging technology through 2023. Twelve months on and Deloitte's Tech Trends 2024 report takes a deep dive into the events of the past year to help businesses learn how they will be impacted by generative AI during the next 12 months. Also: AI in 2023: A year of breakthroughs that left no human thing unchanged At the end of each year, Deloitte releases its annual Tech Trends report to help business and IT leaders learn about how emerging technologies might impact their businesses, and how to best deploy these tools. Unsurprisingly, generative AI was a major topic of Deloitte's 15th annual report. Within the first 60 days of ChatGPT's release to the public, OpenAI garnered 100 million users. For comparison, it took TikTok, a major leader in the social media space, nine months to reach that milestone. #AI #aiadoption #generativeai #chatgpt https://lnkd.in/g9z94NdK

Andreessen Horowitz recently shared an article (published in mid-September) exploring the consumer adoption of Generative AI products. It's exciting to see that people are not only showing interest but are willing to pay for these innovative solutions. However, when compared to mainstream consumer applications like WhatsApp, the user base of even ChatGPT remains relatively small. This gap underscores a significant opportunity for growth and innovation. YOLY aims to bridge this divide by amalgamating the advantages of WhatsApp with the promise of Generative AI, aspiring to create a tool that is both substantial and user-friendly. The journey of blending the familiarity and user base of mainstream apps with the avant-garde capabilities of Generative AI is a thrilling endeavor. What are your thoughts on the potential impact of such a fusion? I would love to hear your insights! https://lnkd.in/eyJwvfgJ

In my day-to-day role, I regularly communicate with colleagues from around the world at Webster University's various campus locations. It's always a delight to see how each location presents its own cultural differences while sharing the same mission. I was recently thinking about those differences and brainstorming ways to enhance my cultural understanding...and remembered Hofstede Insights from my undergrad global communications course (shoutout Leilani Carver-Madalon, Ph.D.!) When using The Culture Factor Group's country comparison tool, I noticed a featured article about AI and cultural understanding. The article overviews a study about ChatGPT's cultural intelligence, which is something I had never considered before. If you have a moment, give it a read - it's brief and digestible. https://lnkd.in/gY6p6N_3 Spoiler alert: AI has cultural biases. Although most of us can't change how an AI operates, we can remember that AI produced content may have biases - and that we should review AI content carefully to ensure the end product is not culturally skewed.
