I consider the island Manhattan, where I live, to be like a Poincaré disk when using the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. This is not a criticism, it's a testament to how even (democratic?) the system is. In Poincaré's model, from the reference frame of the viewer, it looks like the distances between points gets smaller as you go to the edge, but this is just an illusion of having projected a higher-dimensional space onto 2 dimensions. If you centered the Poincaré disk on any point, it would look the same. Similarly, whether you live at 125 in Harlem and can take the A or live at 82st on the UWS it's 35 minutes to Chinatown, but give yourself 40; and since you have to give yourself 40, well, it's the same from the Heights. Similarly, 1st Avenue to Broadway may *look* like a half the distance across 79th street than is the distance down Broadway to The Village... trust me, they are the same: one is a crosstown bus. I will leave aside whether this extends wistfully to just how infinite and boundless Manhattan is.

Ep. 64: Changing the Narrative in TV with Andy Mundy-Castle Until relatively recently, the phenomenon of white British families fostering Black children of West African descent was unknown. That's changing, thanks to advocacy by the late, great rapper TY, reporting by Symeon Brown, and the Africa International Film Festival - AFRIFF and BAFTA award-winning documentary “White Nanny, Black Child." This practice started in the 1960s and continued into the 1990s. These fostered children are now parents, uncles, aunties, and maybe, in some cases, grandparents. Some of them were public figures. This experience left an indelible mark on the identities of many of them. In this episode, Christabel N., speaks with Andy Mundy-Castle, the film's director. They discuss making the film, navigating the British media industry, and what creators should consider when telling a sensitive, important story. 'Never eat alone.' I learned this early in my consulting career. We were always supposed to build relationships with clients - learn more about their business, build trust, and sell more work. This practice made me very comfortable eating and chatting with new acquaintances. Even after leaving consulting, I continued this practice, even setting a goal at Expedia to have lunch with three new people a week. Why lunch? I believe that eating together builds a different connection. It's informal. More personal than business. The conversation can stray outside work. We can relax. This ad is a good reminder to sit next to a stranger. You may meet someone interesting. You may alleviate their loneliness even for a brief moment. As 2023 comes to a close and we look forward to the next year, consider a new year goal to eat with someone new (or reconnect with an old friend) at least weekly. https://lnkd.in/gtC67bAj
A small pub, called Charlie’s Bar in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, may have just made the most beautiful Christmas ad of all time leaving John Lewis & the rest behind! ‘There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't yet met.’ - WB Yeats. This is just perfect ❤️
