Last Friday we celebrated the awards. Today, we celebrated the people behind the awards. A grand haul of 18 wins. 7 Gold, 4 Silver, 6 Bronze and 1 Grand Prix! Whilst holding bragging rights for ‘effectiveness’, we are beyond ecstatic to also be crowned as most ‘creative’ at the recent 4As Advertising Festival. We are in a business of ideas and people. And thus, these awards are a culmination in the strong conviction of belief in our ideas and pushing to sell through to the client. We salute the 4As for a brilliantly organized and concluded festival, our clients who believe in us, and the team that rallies together - rain or shine - to bring it all to fruition. We believe dissatisfaction is the mother of reinvention. That’s why our icon is the octopus. It’s the only organism on the planet that routinely edits its own genetic material to adapt, innovate, and thrive. It outsmarts the competition by constantly changing. Reflecting on Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2024: Here’s what we’re implementing into our strategy at Juice. 1. The power of creativity. Creativity extends beyond the creative idea and the ad campaign itself. The creative approach to how these ideas were brought to life through innovative media distribution in addition to traditional channels was energizing. 2. Focusing on sustainability. Building a creative and media approach that allows for sustained growth is critical. 3. Accelerating through digital transformation. Any channel can now be a lead channel. Great campaigns can start on social and end in a Super Bowl commercial activation. 4. Emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion. It's simple. Our team continues to bring you the latest insights, experiences, and inspirations from the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. If you can't be there in person, our correspondents have you covered. Siew Ting Foo In the midst of the AI turbulence and chaos affecting our world, it's easy for brands to get distracted from their core purpose. However, I was inspired by Patagonia's steadfast commitment to their purpose, showcased through their bold "Fashion is None of Our Business" campaign. The session concluded with a poignant quote from Vivienne Westwood: "Buy less, choose well, make it last." This message resonates strongly, especially with the new and next generation. Phoebe Barter Phoebe attended a talk with Jason and Travis Kelce at Sport Beach, which was a lot of fun and really interesting. They discussed authenticity in their podcast and the importance of psychological safety in fostering creativity. Jason Kelce emphasised that being creative requires a safe space and much of their good work comes from listening to their fans. He humorously noted that their demographic has shifted from big, hairy dudes to 12 to 14-year-old girls, highlighting the need to stay loyal to long-time fans while embracing new ones. Another session Phoebe attended at WPP Beach was "What Won and Why," which offered a great summary of learnings from this week's creativity winners. Key takeaways included the importance of true partnerships between clients and agencies, where roles blur, and the observation that work has become more balanced, human, and characterful post-2020. Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity #Day2 A lot of walking, lot of inspirational talks, lot of FOMO feelings 😅 Day 2 was about BRAVERY. Don't be scared, be creative (but remember, it's just not only that). 1) McDonald's and E.L.F. BEAUTY (completely different companies) shared how connecting with their fan base (and not focusing on the 'haters'), co-creating with them and really joining the conversation, was key to their success and fueled highly successful campaigns based on true insights. 2) Mark Ritson's first ever Cannes talk 'Creative is not enough' - to be really controversial with all the other talks. In summary, #creativity it is a vital factor for communications, but there are so much more other elements when it comes to marketing effectiveness. From the importance of market orientation (diagnosis), to having a proper positioning and a clear understanding of who your target is (strategy) right through to the fundamentals of 4Ps tactics. Is this infusion of celebrity culture good for the creative community? 🌟 The last word you'll see here from me about the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, but this pivotal shift is unmistakable. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝: This year, it wasn't merely about groundbreaking campaigns or inventive strategies. The festival spotlighted the significant role of celebrities, transforming them from mere attendees to central figures in creative discourse. Celebrity involvement is bridging the gap between content creation and personal branding, making creativity more accessible. 𝐘𝐞𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Does it enrich our creative landscape, or could it overshadow the pure artistic and strategic endeavors that have traditionally driven our industry? As we embrace this blend of fame and creativity, we must not forget that at the core of every impactful campaign is a creator whose distinct voice and perspective captivate audiences. So... is celebrity culture enhancing or diluting our creative community?

I spoke about Maaate in Campaign’s Private view this week. How I see it is this - it’s not ok to trivialise such an important issue, nor is it ok to pass the responsibility of addressing toxic behaviour onto peers. BUT, ideas that pioneer new conversations on difficult topics aren’t always going to get it right. And the next generation of work that tackles this issue will learn from Maaaate and come out more insightful and more effective. The big lesson here is the importance of the right creative brief with the right story. Invite people with lived experiences to contribute to the work. And I urge our industry to see this piece of work in a wider context - it’s not perfect but no single campaign is going to solve things. It’s a positive step for progress.

Ben Essen has shared some thoughts on how creativity thrives on reimagining the past, featured in his piece for Campaign. He continues, "A [better] question for any creative review is: "We know this worked before, so how do we twist it for a new context?"
