On World Food Day, we are reminded of the importance of food security for communities all over the globe, particularly those living in conflict and post-conflict settings. Pre-genocide, farming made up 75% of the Yezidi community’s livelihoods. ISIS inflicted severe damage on Iraq’s rural farmlands and irrigation systems, particularly around Sinjar Mountain – a deliberate tactic used to cause extensive, indiscriminate, and long-lasting harm to the sustained livelihoods of the Yezidi population and other agrarian communities. Effort and innovation is urgently needed in order to sustainably increase agricultural production, improve the global supply chain, decrease food loss and waste, and ensure all who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition have access to nutritious food. #worldfoodday #nohunger #sustainableagriculture #livelihoods #yezidis #yazidis #freeyezidifoundation

Food security and sustainable agriculture are crucial aspects in maize production in South Africa. Maize plays a significant role in the country's food supply, making it essential to ensure its availability and accessibility to all. Sustainable agricultural practices, such as efficient irrigation techniques, soil conservation, and integrated pest management, are important for long-term maize production. Additionally, promoting crop diversity, investing in research and development, and supporting smallholder farmers can enhance food security by reducing dependence on a single crop and improving the livelihoods of rural communities. #NewAgeFarming

Food loss impacts the livelihoods of 470 million smallholder farmers, lowering their incomes by over 15%. We're proud to have supported Smart Villages Research Group and EcoLife foods through our Research and Development Fund. They developed a game-changing pilot cold room for off-grid use in Uganda, an affordable solution tailored to the needs of rural smallholder farmers. We are asked about Farm Profitability when practicing the land management changes that are being advocated for under Rere ki Uta, Rere ki Tai . This sums it up nicely. Soil is the biggest asset on a farm and Healthy functioning soil = healthy profits!

A healthy soil is characterised by its ability to function as a living ecosystem, providing essential ecosystem services, such as : - nutrient cycling - water retention & plant available water while protecting water quality - reduce sedimentation & runoff - disease & pest control - Store both short and long-term carbon All of which result in reduced inputs that directly impact farm profitability such as fertiliser, herbicides, pesticides, irrigation water and diesel. Effective soil management boosts farmers' productivity, profitability, and income while promoting sustainability and resilience in our environment.
