I just booked an apartment in Chiang Mai's best district for $450/month later this year. Add a scooter rental for $100/month. Then it's only $1.50 street food and free time to completely design a new life. Cheap healthcare. Total cost of living can easily be <$850/month. That's less than most of my friends rent payment. Plus it's full of other nomads and expats who can help you imagine a new life for yourself. ...and it's not only Chiang Mai. There's a 100 places around the world you can find where you can live for less than city rent. Who says a layoff has to mean moving in with your parents or burning down your savings? How to Keep the New Business Flowing According to Newsweek, Americans can no longer afford their cars. This substantiates what I have been saying for the last seven months...the economy is not good, and it will worsen before it gets better. JP Morgan, Disney, and Schwab have been laying off hundreds of workers.   What this means for you and me on Main Street is that as these big layoffs ripple throughout the economy it will put pressure on local businesses on Main Street.   Let me show you why and what you need to do for your business to thrive in 2024.   America is a based on a spend economy. Meaning that the hundreds of workers who got laid off do not have the money to buy a house or car. That means that Home Depot and car sales will slow. As that happens Home Depot and the car companies will fire its employees. As those local companies lay off people those people do not have the money to go to the Chiropractor, Coffee shop, pizza place, car wash, plumber, (main street businesses) etc. Everything spirals downward.   Now this is not all gloom and doom. There will still be people who need to go a chiropractor, there will just be fewer in number. To everyone who lost their jobs in the last round of layoffs at Geico and other companies - I’m sending you strength, warmth and good energy. This is hard. This is a lot to deal with. Be self-compassionate. Be kind to yourself. Please do not internalize the layoff. Please remember that you bring a ton to the table and remember that you are not alone. I Quit.   I am officially retiring the "doorman" position from my resume. 🙌 We've upgraded and now have a doggy door, liberating myself from the constant sliding door shuffle. Bye bye, doorman duty! 😄🐾   This got me thinking about other doors I've closed. I've waved goodbye to the W2 life in my mid-30s. Although I did enjoy the work, there are a couple reasons why W2 life just wasn't my jam: 📅 Chained to the Work Schedule: I wanted more control over my time. ⏰ Constant Deadlines: Talk about stress! 👨👩👦 Lack of Family Time: Work guilt is real! 💼 Layoff Uncertainties: I’m all too familiar with the potential of layoffs. So, how did my husband and I become work optional? 🏢 Diversified Income: We created ways to earn money that didn’t require us to trade our time for money, like passive income through multifamily investments. 🤝 Tribe Vibes: We've surrounded ourselves with folks with abundance and growth mindsets, where we continuously support and challenge each other. 🧠 Mentor Magic: Found mentors who guided and inspired us. Which companies would you sooner not work for? This is a question I always ask because it brings up emotions and feelings towards certain Housebuilders. Sometimes, the opinions of businesses are reflective of hearsay or second-hand opinions where someone else doesn't suit their culture. It shouldn't mean that everyone should avoid certain businesses because it's all about the fit-in factor. When I explain that I don't recruit for many larger Housebuilders as I need them as target businesses for my ethical model, people are surprised. Next year I shall be adding one Volume Housebuilder to my hand-picked client portfolio. You might be thinking that a Volume Housebuilder isn't for you and you might be right. But let us first explore reasons to join a smaller enterprise and reasons for not joining a sausage factory. In the end, it's more about the team than the brand.

My take(from the IBD shop owner perspective) has been this-those who could spool up staff and inventory during the rise in demand made out, and those who didn't certainly lost sales. Who wants to be the conservative one while others are selling everything they can get their hands on and hiring every person to get that inventory/service out the door? We all cheered with the growth and the hiring, finally, we were doing good! I struggle to see how most of those with the biggest layoffs didn't see it(return to normal sales volume) coming well in advance. I listened to Jay Townley and he saw it as a surge, not a boom, predicting accurately that it would slow down sooner rather than later. What I took as the best future indicator was lifting the mask mandate indoors. I put the brakes on buying with that announcement(April 2022). Too early, maybe. I was in that group who couldn't get enough inventory to benefit, so my high wasn't as high as others. (do we not remember when your dealer level before the surge 2020 mattered since a large account took priority when inventory was tight and the next years it was suggested to write a large order in 2021/22 or get nothing at all) I had enough staff to handle what came in for service and sell what I could get for inventory. I did hire one person who is still here and is actually working more hours than last year and stuck with getting inventory as needed since that is a safe way to go when things are uncertain. I will say I do stock a higher level of parts for service since that did speed up turn over, and I am maintaining that as I move forward-a good lesson. Those who grew are now responding by cutting excess people and bringing down inventory levels by any necessary means(discounting!). This is obviously a painful lesson to struggle through, more so for those losing their jobs.

Layoffs never come at a good time. Despite any science placed into how to do it, when to do it, who to communicate it, what to offer, etc, the news conveyed to those impacted is significant and, for some, crushing. In my opinion, some of the most flawed set of phrases used are "this was a business decision, not a personal one. It's not at all a judgement on you." For those impacted, the layoff is absolutely personal. Many lives are turned upside down, with some no longer being able to afford their rent or mortgage. The loss of health insurance can be shattering, especially considering how much more expensive COBRA insurance is. For some, a significant portion of their social identities is tied to their work. Losing a job is akin to losing a sense of self. We tell people the decision is not a judgment about them. But it is hard for them to accept that when they look at who remains. "Why me and not them?" "Was I less valuable than ____?" "I worked so much harder than ____." "I have so many more financial obligations than ____." And, when those questions become more and more intense, the notion of "this was just a business decision" becomes insulting. While there are no "good" ways to conduct lay offs, I do believe there are better ways of communicating them.
